or choose a dumb phone.

I don't think that's going to solve the problem. From what I've read, "feature" phones have also been communicating while the user thinks they're off.

Buy or make your own Faraday pouch

or choose a dumb phone.

I think a Faraday pouch is a must have for constant travelers, put your credit cards in it as well. Just don't lose it! I made a couple of non conductive cards for my wallet for when I traveled back to the U.S. a couple of years ago. The security guy at the airport picked it up on his scanner and asked, he said okay and let me through once I explained it.
What was I thinking?

I agree we shouldn't need such a thing, but at least it's a solution for the paranoid :)

That said, the minute you take it out of the pouch it'll likely immediately upload everything it knows .. though at least it won't know where it's been.

People that are that paranoid should just live in the mountains with zero technology, live off the land, and stay away from everyone. Camouflage the house for when the satellites pass over, of course. ::) (of course, then you're so isolated that the aliens abduct you and nobody knows about it :P )

Sorry, but there's protecting your data and then there's taking it too far. Everything is connected to everything else these days. The only way to avoid it is to literally live off the grid, as described above.
