What pin said.

If you boot to a Peppermint USB stick (or DVD) and select "Try Peppermint", then you're in a "Live" environment.

It doesn't need to be a USB, a DVD is also a "Live" environment .. so where I said "LiveUSB" just swap that for "LiveDVD" and you'll be good :)

I can't tell you how large you might want it.
Mark /dev/sd1 and choose Partition -> Resize.
Now, you can move the slider to the right until you're happy with the size. The press aply and wait until it finishes doing it's job.
Remember don't move the start of the partition!  ;)

And does the system boot now ?

If so, you're done.

If not and grub is now broken, boot back to the LiveUSB/LiveDVD and run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
then
Code: [Select]
for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; done
then
Code: [Select]
sudo chroot /mnt
then
Code: [Select]
grub-install /dev/sda
then
Code: [Select]
update-grub
Then hit Ctrl+D to exit the chroot environment.

and finally reboot without the LiveUSB/LiveDVD
