You could also try ditching pulseaudio

Though this would come with its own little problems, such as the volume control on the panel needing to be replaced (or volume controlled in another manner such as via alsamixer), etc.

There's an awful lot that can be done with audio in Linux (possibly more than Windows), such as dropping pulseaudio for ALSA, and things like 'jack', and indeed even driver options and quirks .. but I'm not really the person to advise on these.

Yes, you could try without pulseaudio.
But, before you do that... do you use bluetooth? Bluez depends on pulse, so removing pulseaudio will kill bluetooth.

You could try the latest release of Ubuntu, https://www.ubuntu.com/ from a live-usb...
If that works, we could help you move to the 4.19 kernel.

Woops!  Looks like my reading list is growing ... pulse-audio, alsa, jack, kernels.   ???  REALLY appreciate all this advise.

Don't use Bluetooth but will check out the latest Ubuntu, thanks.

I agree with murrymint and suspect that it the integrated audio board that's at fault here.

OKAY!  Just plugged in my cheapo USB Sound card and all is working fine, no C&Ps!!!  Hopefully this will be the end of this particular problem though I'm sure another one will surface in short order.
Ones again, thanks to you all for your assistance.  Pin, I'll keep a lookout for you "How To".
I'm gonna go listen to some music now ...

Only problem is... now, I'm lusting for an Audigy RX 7.1 PCIe sound card.

Thanks, gerj  :P

Interesting! It's made with U.K. components. Plus my lowly EVGA GT 710 card plays this video in 2160p   :o
