Requesting an Ethernet network address forever
« on: August 08, 2014, 01:01:20 pm »
For various reasons (moving, etc.) I hadn't opened/updated my netbook for a long time. But when I got my internet installed I used it to test and see if it was working (it was), and then I did a Skype call later that week, and it gave me trouble and I messed with the settings until it worked (sorry I can't be more specific here, I didn't think I'd need to remember once it started working...), and then the next time I tried to use the internet it wouldn't work no matter what I did with the settings. It's really frustrating because it worked those other times... why isn't it working now?

I tried to find a solution on the internet, but I am a newbie and maybe I don't know how to phrase my search... So now I am asking here. I'll try to include what's needed the first time but let me know if I leave something out.

The internet, router, and cable are all okay, the desktop computer uses them fine.

Here's what I got for inxi -F

Could it be because you are running Peppermint OS Four?  You say you haven't updated for a long time so maybe you are unaware that Pepper OS Four is no longer supported.  It no longer receives updates.  Peppermint Five was released 23 June 2014.  Maybe a fresh Peppermint Five installation would do the trick.  Good luck  ;)!

I kind of doubt that, AndyInMokum. I still have Peppermint four on one machine (although it will soon be gone) and see nothing like carmen is reporting.

However, I see and agree with your point: carmen should update (new install) Peppermint 5 !!!  ;)

Nice spot Andy :)

I'd still expect wireless to connect, but Peppermint 4 is dead so Peppermint 5 should probably be the OP's next move.

[EDIT]

@ Slim.Fatz

I agree wireless should still work in Peppermint 4 .. but if we're going to need to install anything, it's going to be REALLY difficult in Peppermint 4 .. so I'd still advise a move to Peppermint 5 (which will probably fix the issue anyway).

Okay, I will go up to Peppermint 5 and see what happens.  I'll let you know how that goes. Thanks!
