Hey guys - is there a surefire way of doing this? I've worked my way through a few suggested solutions but no joy - anyone had success with a method?

So what have you tried ?

Theoretically all you should need is either

a) install libdvd-pkg
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install libdvd-pkg

and/or

b) Install VLC
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install vlc

Hi PC, I tried those recommendations and they did not work. I am trying these on both an old Optiplex 360 and a newer i3core device. On both these computers, VLC works perfectly on windows (both are dual boot) and plays the dvds but will not work at all on p9. Please help!

Did you install the restricted extras packages? I recommend the Xubuntu one.

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-restricted-extras

That will give you more codecs than you had before.

Are you sure its a dvd and not a blue-ray disc?
See this thread, https://askubuntu.com/questions/811071/is-there-an-easy-way-to-watch-blu-ray-in-ubuntu-16-04

Now, be careful when adding a ppa to your system. Have a look at the ppa, check if its being maintained and decide if you trust it or not. Also check if the package you need is now available from the main repos, if so take that instead.
Finally, read about how you can remove a ppa, so you know what to do in case you need to.
