Firefox Critically Out of Date
« on: February 03, 2019, 07:44:15 pm »
When I go onto Firefox, it says that it is critically out of date.  When I download the update from Firefox, there are a bunch of files and I have no idea what to do with them.  What is the proper way to update Firefox? >:(

In my experience, you can install updates to Firefox in either of two ways.  1) Directly within the About Firefox box.   2) Directly through any one of the package systems available (i.e., Synaptic, Muon, apt (command line)).  Going to Firefox or Mozilla, just makes the process more complicated.

Make sure you check the update manager for updates. We get Firefox updates from the Ubuntu repositories and they come through the update manager. The latest version is Firefox Quantum 65, which is available through the repositories.

Or, open the terminal and run,
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get updatefollowed by
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
it will update all your packages including firefox.
If you haven't update and upgraded in a long time, you might have a lot of outdated packages. I would also reboot the machine and run the following,
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get autoremoveand
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get autoclean

Click the little shield icon in the system tray (by the clock bottom right of screen) .. this will open the update manager.

In the update manager, click the "Refresh" button.

When that's finished, click the "Install Updates" button.
(if asked, accept the changes)

When that's finished, close ALL Firefox instances .. then reopen Firefox.

Then in Firefox go to

Help > About Firefox

and it shoiuld tell you you're running Firefox 65.0
