Is there any reason you MUST have the 415 driver ?

My problem is when I add the PPA I'm still not offered the 415 driver .. nvidia-settings gets updated to 415, but the driver stays at 390, this results in a broken nvidia-settings for me too

At no point does additional drivers offer me 415 .. I can only assume this nvidia card isn't supported by 415

I take it additional drivers is OFFERING you 415, and that you didn't force that driver somehow ?

I don't know how much I can help here, because again I can't replicate your setup

It'd be interesting to know what would happen if you purged that ppa
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
then
Code: [Select]
sudo ppa-purge ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
then try the default drivers

Might be a good idea to switch to nouveau before you purge the ppa.

Does nvidia-settings work then ?

Apples n' Oranges I suppose...

The nVidia drivers on this machine had been giving me fits, recently. nVidia 410 & 415 used to work fine, but something changed.

Finally, I had enough and manually wiped everything off my P9 install, that had to do with nVidia, and reinstalled the nVidia drivers - one at a time - starting with ver 415, and working my way down.

nVidia 415 didn't work, so I wiped everything and tried 410

nVidia 410 didn't work either (at this point, I started worrying) so I wiped everything again and tried 396

BOOM, BABY!  nVidia 396 took right off, and it's been working a treat ever since.

Just saying  ;)

Carry on...

This is where we end up in version hell.

How much work have you put into this installation?

What I'm asking is would it be easier to simply reinstall and go with the "recommended" nvidia drivers (NO ppa added) ?

We can try to figure this out without a reinstall, but when I got into version hell it took me hours to figure out.

YES turn off secureboot

Before a reinstall you could try
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge libnvidia-common-415 libnvidia-compute-415:amd64
then
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libnvidia-cfg1-390:amd64 libnvidia-common-390 libnvidia-compute-390:amd64 libnvidia-compute-390:i386 libnvidia-decode-390:amd64 libnvidia-decode-390:i386 libnvidia-encode-390:amd64 libnvidia-encode-390:i386 libnvidia-fbc1-390:amd64 libnvidia-fbc1-390:i386 libnvidia-gl-390:amd64 libnvidia-gl-390:i386 libnvidia-ifr1-390:amd64 libnvidia-ifr1-390:i386 nvidia-compute-utils-390 nvidia-dkms-390 nvidia-driver-390 nvidia-kernel-common-390 nvidia-kernel-source-390 nvidia-prime nvidia-settings nvidia-utils-390 xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-390
then reboot

but something tells me there will be other stuff left behind from the ppa that's gonna throw a spanner in the works.

You'll never have that option in a Prime setup.

Why do you need it though ? .. are you suffering screen tearing ?

There are two things I always do with Nvidia

In openGL settings - turn off Allow Flipping

and Force Composite Pipeline and Force Full Composite Pipeline

That way I NEVER have screen tearing in any videos and or games

If this is what it is, I will now try and game with it and see what happens

Thanks for all your help
