USB and wifi
« on: February 01, 2019, 02:38:12 pm »
Hello all. I reclaimed an old HP stream laptop computer after the latest windows update would not function on it. The onboard WiFi card will not work. Why I don't know. I purchased a small WiFi dongle that will not light up when plugged in. An older much larger, which is why I want to use the other one, dongle works flawlessly. The new on has Linux drivers on a CD that I moved to a flash drive. From there my knowledge is maxed out. Anyone direct me to a course of action that may help?
Thank you,
Kenny

The other commands I could not get anything from. It kept saying a process was running but nothing came up.

Thanks again for your help.

Copy and paste the entire line of code as shown and post the output, you should get different output. Looks like you tried to break it up, if I'm reading the output right.

with your old/large/working dongle plugged in (so you have an active internet connection), open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall build-essential bcmwl-kernel-source
once that has finished, reboot your PC without the old/large/working dongle adapter inserted.

Does the internal wifi work now ?

If not, does it spring to life if you run:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe wl
?

If still notthing, please post the output from:
Code: [Select]
lspci -vnn | grep -i net

Thank you!!!!

I want to express my sincerest thanks to all of you for helping me with this. I find it intriguing that a simple command repaired the internal wifi card for me. I am betting to anybody with even a moderate knowledge of how modern computers work would have been able to figure it out on their own. Obviously I am not moderately knowledgeable!! I use this laptop daily as it was inexpensive and relatively small to carry back and forth to school. Plus to my full time job.

I have decided to finish up some education after graduating from a trade school nearly 32 years ago...... I found Peppermint by accident and now have nothing currently using Windows in my ownership. Maybe I will throw on a class or two about computers and then I won't have to bother you guys anymore :)

Anyway thanks again I really appreciate it!!
