issue installing hplip via software manager(solved)
« on: August 06, 2014, 06:53:51 pm »
i'm running Peppermint OS 5.  i own a HP M1212NF laser printer.  i tried installing hplip via the software manager and it asked me for root and password.  i found this to be weird because no installation has asked me for root and password before.  i tried to change the user from root to whatever user is logged but it is greyed out.  i also inputted the user password and nothing happens.  can anyone suggest something?

i also tried installing with the already install but the printer did not print anything...

Hi,

If you use the forum's search feature and enter hplip as your serch term you might very well find your problem's solution since this has been asked several times in past.

If you still cannot solve your problem after doing the above, then ask here again and supply some of the information about your setup (e.g. is the printer being connected via USB, or with ethernet?) that was requested in the posts that you found in your search.

Good morning wflceron, I'm not quite sure what you mean by, "...it asked me for root and password".  Root is when you have admin rights to everything and the password is your admin password that gives you permission to use the admin rights  If the package manager didn't ask for your password, there would be something seriously wrong.

Open a terminal window with the following keystrokes:
Quote
Ctrl+Alt+t
Once that has opened enter the following commands into the terminal window.

Tip: Linux is case sensitive. To reduce typographical errors, click on, Code: [Select] to highlight contents.  Centre click on your mouse while in the terminal to paste contents.

Code: [Select]
apt update && apt install hplip-gui -y

Hit enter and do the password thing if asked.  I hope this helps  ;)!!

Note: For security, passwords are entered invisibly into a terminal window.  You will NOT see any indication that a password has been entered.

No linux system will not alow you to install software without first entering your password for security reasons so it's perfectly correct you'r being asked for a password, the error message is saying "incorrect password" are you sure you're entering the correct password, also remember your password is case sensitive so make sure Caps Lock isn't on

So from what I see on your video the only problem is that you're entering the wrong password

This same question and problem has also been addressed (and, as I recall, solved) in the old Peppermint forum. A little searching around there will be worth the effort.

Hi wflceron, sorry to hear you are still having issues.  You appear to be doing everything correctly, until you reach the password.  This leads me to concur with  Slim.Fatz and emegra that the password is incorrect or being incorrectly entered.  However, if the issue persists, you could try reinstalling, "hplip" a slightly different way.  The way explain  to you earlier should be fine but it costs nothing to try something different.

To remove, "hplip enter the following commands into a terminal window.
Code: [Select]
apt remove --purge hplip

Code: [Select]
apt update && apt install hplip hplip-gui

This way may pull in dependencies differently.  It is worth a try.  Good luck  :)!

have you tried installing your printer from the "Printers" in System Tools

if you want to try it go to Menu>System Tools>Printers, a dialogue box will open up...select "ADD"  then a list of options will open select "Network Printer" hopefully your printer will show up then follow the instructions from there

if the printer doesn't show up you may have to enter the ip address of the printer

Hope this helps

Good luck
