Google DNS Service 8.8.8.8 Now Supports DNS-over-TLS Security

By Swati Khandelwal (Hacker News 9-Jan-2019)

* BTW, use 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844 for IPv6   ;)

Can't say that I understand this yet, but...

I'm an Opera user - currently sitting @ 57.0.3098.116

Pretext: I've used Opera for awhile now, and one of the features I loved was the free mini-VPN feature. However, when Opera sold their browser to the chicoms, they didn't throw in their VPN servers, as part of the deal. The new Opera browser owners scrambled to come up with their own VPN server network, but it's been a disastrously slow process . From time to time, I test their progress for a few days, and their efforts have been severely lacking.  Sooo, I disable it until the next testing period.

I decided to test Google's IPv6 & IPv4 DNS-over-TLS services on Peppermint 9R2

Code: [Select]
╭─vindsl@Boogaloo-6 ~
╰─$ nmcli dev show | grep DNS
IP4.DNS[1]:                             8.8.8.8
IP4.DNS[2]:                             8.8.4.4
IP6.DNS[1]:                             2001:4860:4860::8888
IP6.DNS[2]:                             2001:4860:4860::8844

After rebooting my LAN devices, and running various tests for a couple of hours, everything appeared normal, so I moved on.

The last thing I did, before retiring for the night, was test the Opera mini-VPN feature. It was feking flying, so I ran some speed tests.

I had a 60.0/5.0 Mbps bonded-pair VDSL2+ service installed a couple of months ago, here at the abode. I've been running speed tests under various scenarios every since.

Now get this - running the exact same tests, on the same sites , that I ran minutes earlier - Opera with the mini-VPN enabled (currently through Liechtenstein) is scoring speeds 2-3 times faster than going through my ISP's default network and DNS servers.  8)

I'm gonna be scratching my head over this one for awhile  :-\

Well, now we know why they rushed to get this done  :)

 Ukraine! :o  Burr, VinDSL.  And I thought the temperature was cold in New Hampshire!!  ;D

Regarding Google Public DNS, Quard9's and Cloudflare's entry into the DNS market appears to have lit a spark under Google's feet here.  I believe this was a necessary move on Google's part if they wanted their DNS service to remain competitive.  I'd bet a lot of Google's DNS users migrated over to Quad9's and Cloudflare's free public DNS services when once they learned what those particular DNS services were offering their users in regards to security and privacy.

I'm glad you spotted and posted that article, VinDSL.    What the heck, I'll try it out.  It's been awhile since I've tried Google Public DNS.

Thanks,

Right.

The mini-Opera VPN server I'm going through is located in Lichtenstein, as the geolocation map shows. But, the Google AI bots have me pegged as speaking Russian, and living in the Urkaine. I stumped the chimps...

I went to the CVS Pharmacy site, last night, to update my account information, at it banned me (my machine). It said that they don't do business in my locale, and wouldn't even allow me to view their web site.

I cleared the cookies, but it didn't do any good. I had to use a different browser to login to their site. The chimps got me on that one. LoL  :D

Hey don't underestimate chimps intelligence  .. I've heard they can re-write the entire works of Shakespeare without ever having read it .
