I don't know if you remember Malcolm Smith but he was hours ahead of everyone at the 'Mexican 1000' race. He brushed past a rock and it snapped off his shift lever. In the interview I read, at the time, Malcolm said he always carries duct tape, vise grips, and a small can of WD-40 in his fanny pack. He said he could fix almost anything using just those three items.

Malcolm finished the race (and won) using a pair of vise grips as a shift lever. LoL

Makes perfect sense to me, armed with those you're pretty much ready for (crude but effective) nuclear physics :)
(with a bit of battlefield surgery, automotive mechanics, and civil engineering thrown in)

(although seriously, you'd probably not wanna use 'gorilla tape', or worse still 'fibrefix' in that scenario)
