Change.... Not me
« on: January 07, 2019, 10:47:24 am »
I have been using Peppermint for just over a year and felt like it might be time for a change.  So I did a bit of distro surfing to see what was out there...

Some were faster
Some were prettier
Some were smaller
Some were bigger
Some had fancy features
Some kept is simple.

With each one, I was left feeling just a little bit empty.  There was always something missing.
Peppermint takes the best bits of all of them and turns it into a fast efficient OS.

Needless to say, after plenty of testing, I am staying firmly with Peppermint.

While I really like KDE Plasma and the Gnome desktops (among others), overall, Peppermint is the best choice. That's because it offers something unique, an effort that's very appreciated.

However I do add Synapse https://launchpad.net/synapse-project to my desktop and sometimes I miss KDE Connect (the current available version is a hefty snap download).
There are neither beginnings or endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.

You know what, it does have a strangely addictive quality to it.  It's just a shame that I still need Windows to run Excel for some particularly chunky spreadsheets  :'( otherwise I would commit both laptops to Peppermint.

This one was tugging at me earlier this year:
solydxk

I even tested the LiveKey and was happy with it, and when my HDDs crashed I had an opportunity to just move.....
But, before leaving Pep I wrote down all the reasons to move, and because  I had 0 reasons.......I forgot about the whole thing and put pep back on my new drive.  ;)

That's when you know you have a good distro.

The good news is that when I was looking around, Pep is mentioned in quite a few "best of" lists so hopefully we will start to attract some new passers-by.

Honestly my focus is not on user numbers, I'm primarily focussed on keeping happy the users that have already found us and decided Peppermint fits their use case, ethos, and ethics.

If I were primarily focussed on new user numbers I'd probably install things like LibreOffice / GIMP / etc. out of the box, and possibly choose a more mainstream DE .. but instead I'll stick to Peppermint's ethos, and keeping happy only those that agree with it. Peppermint is for Peppermint people, Peppermint is a 'community', the 'product' is secondary to that community and 'for them'.

I'll always be welcoming to new users, but only where they generally agree with our ethos .. this is NOT because I'm not open to new ideas (I am), but because I'm not willing to drop our current ethos and fly in the face of our current user base just to please people who want Peppermint to turn into something it's not, and who would be better served by another distro.

Hope that made sense ?

[EDIT]

That said, if someone can prove to me that ignoring current users wishes and going KDE with thousands of pre-installed apps/bloat and a blue/grey theme would make me a millionaire .. I guess I could  be tempted :))
