Does running :
Code: [Select]
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri "file:///usr/share/peppermint/wallpapers/PeppermintCold.jpg"
or:
Code: [Select]
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri "file:///usr/share/peppermint/wallpapers/Peppermint.jpg"
result in thhe wallpaper changing, or an error message ?

Thank you for replying. Here's the log for the two commands.

Go to the Peppermint Control Center ==> Display.

Be sure to UNCHECK "mirror displays" and be sure to CHECK 'primary display'.

This worked for a few workstations I have installed with Peppermint 9 for a couple of friends. The above workaround works every time on my end.

EDIT: Do you by any chance have Firejail installed and used the
Code: [Select]
firecfg
command? If so, that could also be the problem as integrated Firejail messes up permissions on folders.

Okay you have an ownership/permission issue somewhere in this path that is making the database unwriteable:-

/home/neil/.config/dconf/user

Please post the output from
Code: [Select]
namei -l /home/neil/.config/dconf/user
so we can see ownership and permissions for that path

y

I don't see the display option in Control Center. I think I have some problems with folder permissions like PCNetSpec said.

Okay it looks like your:-

/home/neil/.config/dconf

directory has somehow become owned by root .. let's fix that.

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
sudo chown -R neil:neil /home/neil/.config/dconf
now see if you can change your wallpaper ?

Hi neilann,

You must not purchase anything. There are very many articles and even free books about linux (also for beginners) available on the interweb. One site that I check often for all sorts of linux-related information (and which almost daily lists beginner articles for learning about linux) is LXer  ;) The free books are not always the latest releases, but the basics (for example, using the terminal, files ownership, adding and removing kernels, network tools, and much more) have not really changed much (if at all) in the last ten years!

So look around, search with startpage.com or duckduckgo.com and I'm sure you will find more things to read and learn about linux than you will ever have time to finish.  8)
