advice about rescue cd/usb for use with peppermint
« on: December 29, 2018, 07:18:25 am »
Hello All.
today i had a kind of BSOD in my mind.
one off my dual boot with win10 and in this case Ubuntu gave me a grub problem after the 1809 update from windows.

tried to boot with a other lightweight distro and found out that the Linux partition had no label than empty unused space.
bugger  :o
i was planning to remove the ubuntu for a peppermint 9, but not now.
so the pc is installing peppermint 9 right now, but this makes me wonder, is there a rescue cd/usb option somewhere in peppermint?
ore what do you use to be ready for these kinds of problems?
i have another pc that will have the win10 update to, again with dual boot and in this case peppermint.

so what can i do to make sure that when win10 messes the system up i can recover from that?

The best thing you can do is have a Peppermint 9 LiveUSB handy, and learn how to use chroot to reinstall GRUB

See here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing#via_ChRoot

But it never hurts to have a SuperGRUB2 disk handy as well.

agreed super grub 2 saved me last night ... spent 6 hours doing a re-install and re config on one of my boxes and normally i make snapshots as i go along , didn't do it last night and of course the last thing i did was install updates and the update put my administrator account in a login loop somehow ... 6 hours of work !!!!! popped in grub rescue and in 10 mins was back into my box and creating a snapshot this time ( fool me once ) haha
im a hillbelly i lay dwn & my belly makes a hill

They should rename it - "SaveMyBaconGRUB2", or "Arrrrrrrrrrrgh_Oh_Yeah_SuperGRUB2" :)

I'd still advise people to get to grips with reinstalling grub via a chroot environment .. if only for the knowledge.
(chroot is a wonderful thing)
