Can't seem to get WINE working :( [SOLVED]
« on: December 28, 2018, 01:13:57 pm »
Hi!

I can't seem to get WINE working on my ASUS laptop (an X55U).  I try installing it from Synaptic, which indicates it's installed.   But nothing happens when I try running a Windows program that worked before with WINE; and still does on my desktop.

 ???

So, I tried these instructions from WINE HQ:
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key
sudo apt-key add winehq.key
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/bionic main'
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable

# for Ubuntu 18.04 and/or Linux Mint 19.x

That definitely didn't work.  That gummed up both Synaptic and the terminal update command with an error message about a defective line generated by the repository line.  And I had to go into /etc/apt/sources.list to delete the line so generated before either $ apt update or synaptic would work at all.

Anyone know why I'd be having this trouble with WINE?  It worked for me before PMOS 9 on this laptop.  And WINE works fine too on my desktop computer.  Any input would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Oh, yes, here's my inxi -F output, in case this offers any clues as to what's amiss:

Dunno where you got those instructions, but this command:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/bionic main'
is missing a space just before "bionic" so should have read:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ bionic main'
Okay let's fix it...

Open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
gksudo xed /etc/apt/sources.list
find the two lines (probably at the very bottom) that read:-
Code: [Select]
deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/bionic main
# deb-src https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/bionic main
and change them so they read:-
Code: [Select]
deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ bionic main
# deb-src https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ bionic main
SAVE the file, and exit the text editor.

Back in the terminal, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
and now you shouldn't get any errors.

And now your:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable
should work.

Hi, Hi!

Your instructions worked a treat!   :)

I actually got those commands from the WINE HQ website,.  I thought they should be good.  Until it became apparent they weren't.

Oh well, it is working now.

Thanks once again for the help!
