No liveUSB will open under Peppermint 4
« on: August 05, 2014, 10:20:05 am »
Hi everyone,

I've been using Peppermint 4 on my Asus EEE PC 1001 HA designed for Windows XP since April, but I decided to change my distro considering that it is no longer updated (and other considerations, such as not been able to write tildes in Spanish). My problem is that although the live USB is burned correctly and the BIOS is set to boot first from the USB  and even the CDROM (which my netbook doesn't have), the computer seems to spend some time checking out the USB and then proceeds to the Pep 4 welcome window as if the USB wasn't connected. Do you have any ideas of what's wrong?

Some quick notes:

As far as I know, the BIOS is working fine.
I installed Peppermint 4 myself using the same USB flashdrive that I'm trying to use now (it's 2G).
I have burned correctly Peppermint 5 (also Mint 17 xfde) using the terminal and according to the information provided here: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/744

Thanks in advance

I burned Peppermint 5 using the following command:

sudo dd if=~/Desktop/Peppermint-5-20140623-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb1 oflag=direct  bs=1048576

I don't remember how I burned Pepp 4... I've been wondering if I messed up with the command or if I should try burning the USB stick with another OS...

Hi schwa77, how's it going?  You are not entering the correct code.  There is a guide on how to dd an ISO at the following link: How to dd an ISO.  Find Reply #7 and follow the instructions very carefully.

A word of caution:  You must be ultra careful when using the dd syntax.  It is immensely powerful and equally unforgiving.  Backup any data and/or, anything critical before using dd.  An easy way to do this is to take a disk image with: Clonezilla.  It is very easy to use and can save a lot of "weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth"  :D.  I hope this helps, good luck  ;)

The dd command shouldn't have contained a partition

so out with /dev/sdb1
and
in with /dev/sdb
;)

Here's what I use (assuming the ISO is on your desktop and the USB stick is /dev/sdb)
Code: [Select]
cd ~/Desktop
then
Code: [Select]
sudo dd if=Peppermint-5-20140623-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=1M

As AndiInMokum says, it may be best to use Unetbootin .. but if you decide to go with "dd", be EXTREMELY careful with the syntax (particularly the "of=" part) .. if you accidentally put the wrong device in here dd will happily overwrite your hard drive with zero warning  .. believe me, I know  :o

[SOLVED]

Hi everyone!

Thank you all for your help. I tried changing /dev/sdb1 for dev/sdb and I got the following answer:

dd: abriendo /dev/sdb/: Es un directorio (dd: opening /dev/sdb/:It's a directory

So I installed unetbootin in my other computer and tried to burn the OS and it did the trick! It was a problem burning the OS after all, which is so much better than having a real problem with the netbook...

Thanks again :)
