Failed to start session
« on: December 23, 2018, 12:01:28 am »
Hey! Day one Peppermint user here.

I'm locked out of logging in to my computer's account. If I type in my password, it says, "Failed to start session". If I type in an incorrect password, it just says its an incorrect password.

The guest login gives me the same error, too.

Your desktop has gotten broken in someway

At startup switch to the command line by Press CTRL+ALT+F1 and type your user name and password.

then type in

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a

Hopefully this will let you back in - if not I think you will have to reinstall your desktop - but I do not think it is available to download like ubuntu-desktop is so that would mean a full reinstall - maybe someone else can "chime in" in case I am wrong about the desktop.

My computer was broken in? I don't know if that's it - my computer's only been with me in my room for the entire day, and no one else has come in or anything...

Anyway-- for some reason, I can't do that either. When I press Ctrl + Alt + F1 to open up the command line, I can type in my username, but when it comes to typing in the password, nothing appears no matter what buttons I press.

When you type a password into a terminal (or text console), nothing is echoed to screen .. not even ***** .. but it is going in, so just type your password then hit the enter key.

PS. I don't think Lord Rodin meant your computer was broken INTO .. just that it was BROKEN. ;)

Your desktop is broken  - not broken into  -  guess I should have been more clear - not seeing anything when you type your password is normal as PCNetSpec has said - just hit enter after typing it in

It still seems weird that my desktop is broken after one day - how could that happen? I haven't even finished installing my programs yet D:

Anyways - typing in the password worked! But... I'm not sure what to do from here.

So I logged in again, and here's where we're at:

sudo service lightdm restart just brings me back to the peppermint login screen - where I still fail to start a session.

Looks like somehow you've managed to uninstall peppermint-default-session and possibly peppermint-default-settings.

Theoretically you could chroot in from a LiveUSB session and attempt to reinstall peppermint-default-session .. but you've likely managed to uninstall more than just that, so a reinstall is most likely the quickest/easiest option.
