X Player DVDS not playing ball [SOLVED]
« on: December 22, 2018, 02:30:42 pm »
Done a video today about X Player not able to play DVDS out of the box, not the fault of Peppermint, not the fault of Linux Mint either, just one of those things. Though finally got a picture, but unable to watch it as stuttering and sound is popping all over the place. Xplayer does not recognize my DVD drive either, the only way I finally got anything out of it, was to add the VOB files manually, but like I say that was just plain nasty, just like how terrestrial  television used to be before we went digital. I don't think there is an answer to this, not even uninstalling VLC or SMPlayer done the trick, nor does uninstalling libdvd.css file and reinstalling it again. I don't think anyone has the answer for this and being, that Peppermint has removed VLC and I don't blame them, cause a lot of things going wrong with VLC as of late, after the updated version got released. I have some screenshots of Xplayer but where is the upload button, on this site?

Thank you PCNET hopefully I got them correct? It is weird though as to why Xplayer won't play DVDs properly, though I can't remember if Totem Player from years ago played DVDs either, as that is what Xplayer is based on. :)

It's working for me :-\

I just opened XPlayer, then went to:-

Movie > Open

then navigated to:-

/media/mark

then highlighted the directory that is the DVD (in the right hand pane .. and clicked the "Add Directory" button .. and the DVD began to play (including menus).

i should add that I'd already installed
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install libdvd-pkg
and run
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg
first.

Once I get respin fully installed on my main drive, I will do what you have done and hopefully get it going. Will report back soon. Many thanks  ;)

The VOB files played directly were breaking up for me too .. but if I loaded the DVD with the above procedure, it played perfectly :)

Not the most obvious of procedures, and in PM9 you'll probably need to manually mount the DVD first by accessing it once in the file manager (because we dropped the automounter).

The other option would be to add back in the automounter as instructed here:

I have a similar issue with xplayer player playing DVDs or more rightly a DVD.iso i have a DVD.iso of my daughters wedding stored on my NAS which has 3 chapters, I can navigate to it ok and it will play but it will only play the 1st chapter,  I can't select any of the 3 menu items either with mouse or a key combination which VLC can do no problem, in spite of that I prefer it to VLC but so far that's the only downside for me

Okay automounting and autoplaying DVD's in Peppermint 9 and 9 Respin.

1) install libdvd-pkg
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install libdvd-pkg
2) Follow the instructions here to add automounting back into Peppermint 9
https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,7102.0.html

In Peppermint 9 (or if you've reinstalled VLC) you're done.

If you're running Peppermint 9 Respin (or have ditched VLC for Xplayer in Peppermint 9), continue below.

3) Go to:-
Menu > Settings > Removable Drives and Media > Multimedia (tab)

and change the two references for "vlc" to "xplayer" .. so it looks like this:-

Now DVD's should automagically load Xplayer when inserted.

Thank you so much for this, Xplayer is now playing Dave Allen. I think the problem was, that I did not have the correct codecs in, or be it they were old and also just the libdvdcss, where as what is needed for Xplayer to work with DVDs is the libdvd pkg, which then sorts out and builds the correct codec for you and keeps it up to date at the same time. Also I had VLC and SMplayer installed, which probably did not help matters. I'm now using the respin, fully installed onto my main 500GB SSD, with my 1TB SSD hybrid as my home folder. It's running smoothly, just got to get a few more things installed and I'll be back to how it should be. Many thanks again  :)

Glad to see it's resolved for you Slim.  Could you please go back to the original post and mark it as [Solved] at the end of the Subject Line.
