Peppermint 9 Respin Released.
« on: December 21, 2018, 07:18:14 pm »
The Peppermint 9 Respin is now available for download

The release announcement can be seen here:
https://peppermintos.com/2018/12/peppermint-9-respin-released/

Download links are available on the big red buttons on the main site here:
https://peppermintos.com
but PLEASE use the torrents wherever possible, so not to slow the server to a crawl.

Change List:-

1) Swapped VLC for Xplayer (we've had reports that VLC has been getting a little 'flaky' for some users over their last few releases).

2) Removed the Linux Mint 'Levels' from mintupdate (in line with our update policy, not Linux Mints)

3) Fixed the ICE applications 'Where in the menu ?' category names, so they now match the Xfce whiskermenu categories (ie. 'Sound & Video' renamed to 'Multimedia', and 'System Tools' renamed to 'System').

4) Added 'Accessibility Settings' utility to the Peppermint Settings Panel 'System' Category.

5) Added 'Enable/Disable Neofetch' utility to the Peppermint Settings Panel 'Tweaks' Category.

6) Added 'System Information' utility to the Peppermint Settings Panel 'System' Category.

7) Added a 'Transparent' wallpaper (so users can now set solid colour backgrounds via the 'Wallpapers' utility).

8.) Added back (by popular request) the Peppermint 7 respin 'Peppermint-Sunset' wallpaper (as an option, not as the default wallpaper).

9) Disabled 'Switch windows using the mouse wheel' in the 'Window Buttons' panel applet preferences out-of-the-box (it can easily be re-enabled should you want it, but it could be awkward for touchpad users).

10) Disabled 'Show frame' in the 'Notification Area' (system tray) panel applet preferences.

11) Additional wireless drivers out-of-the-box (Broadcom drivers).

12) Added 'build-essential', 'rename', 'printer-driver-cups-pdf', 'cups-browsed', 'pmount', and 'ntp' packages.

13) Added support for mounting LUKS encrypted volumes (libblockdev-crypto2).

14) Added wacom tablet/touchscreen support (xserver-xorg-input-wacom).

15) Changed chess game SSB to 'Better Than Chess'.

16) Squashed a few minor backend bugs.

17) All updates to date (including the latest versions of mintinstall 4.6.7, Kernel 4.15.0-43, and Firefox 64.0).

Merry Christmas, from Team Peppermint

Congrats on another great release, PCNetSpec. Now go and enjoy your holiday. :)

It's really a shame that VLC went downhill the way it did. I've been using it over ten years. Even before using Linux, I was running it in Windows because Windows Media Player is terrible. But, such is life.

Just so people understand why we swapped out VLC --> Xplayer...

There had been a lot of reports of VLC being stuttery on this forum, these issues were nearly always solvable by selecting the right video output module in VLC's advanced settings, but:-

a) Why should a user need to do that (?)

b) Would new users know how (?)

c) There had been a multiple security concerns recently with VLC and its support libraries .. and they weren't always getting patched quickly enough for my liking (in fact I had to patch it myself when upstream were taking their sweet time).

So we switched it for Xplayer, which seems to do the job admirably .. sure it's missing some of VLC's more advanced functionality (such as streaming, media conversion, etc.,), but those that need that advanced functionality can always reinstall VLC, it's still in the repos so just a couple of clicks away ;)

I second PCNetSpec's request to use the torrents if you can  :).  Can you all also help us out by seeding the torrents?  This really helps the community download a speedy and safe ISO - many thanks.  Enjoy this cracking good Peppermint 9 Respin  ;)

@drik

No, sorry my friend but 9 will not automatically pull in all the changes to the respin. That said there's probably not enough in the respin to warrant a clean install .. I'd just stick with 9 if you already have it.

As soon as the holidays are over, I'll make a post explaining how to manually change the original PM9 into the PM9 Respin .. so you'd probably be best served waiting for that.

If you hadn't mentioned it in that topic, we'd still probably not have build-essential installed OOTB .. so thank YOU :)
