different wallpaper on on each desktop
« on: December 16, 2018, 02:49:41 pm »
I can't find how to install a different image on each workplace. I know where is on Xfce which I've been using for a couple of years. Overall this is a nice looking os.
Thanks sawer

I'm not sure this is possible with nemo controlling the desktop .. could you not just stitch 2 walpapers together in GIMP ?

Hi everyone !

I have a few questions to ask, and this one was one of them. I would find it practical as well if we could have different wallpapers for each workplace, because it can become confusing when we are on a rush, to know at first sight where we are...
Thanks for your good job though Peppermint staff, I tried since more than 1 month to install Peppermint 9 on my Hp Stream 14, and tonight I finally succeeded. I am very happy because I wanted this OS from the start when I bought my laptop. Great job guys, I love this OS !

Like I said, can't you stitch two different wallpapers together in say GIMP .. then span that now single wallpaper across both monitors ?
(as a workaround)

I'm asking a question here as much as making a suggestion .. I don't use multiple monitors, in fact I've pretty much exclusively been a laptop user for the last few years, so I find it difficult to test hypothesis like this.

Maybe Zeb can jump in here .. can it be done Zeb ?

To be specific, it's not about multiple monitors, but about "desktops"... the two to four desktops we can use with any kind of Linux OS and with Peppermint too of course, with only one computer (one monitor)...

Okay here's a small memory resident script that should do what you want:-
Code: [Select]
#!/bin/bash

## Virtual workspace wallpaper switcher for Peppermint.
##
## Switches wallpaper when you switch virtual workspace,
## setting specific desktop backgrounds for each workspace.

wallpaper_dir=/usr/share/peppermint/wallpapers/ # full path to wallpaper directory;
    workspace_wallpaper[0]="Beachfront_(image_by_Ray_Bilcliff).jpg"
    workspace_wallpaper[1]="Beach_Grass_(image_by_Ray_Bilcliff).jpg"
    workspace_wallpaper[2]="Butterfly_(image_by_Ray_Bilcliff).jpg"
    workspace_wallpaper[3]="Dawn_(image_by_Ray_Bilcliff).jpg"
    # add more images if using more than four virtual workspaces.

setwallpaper() {
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri "file://${wallpaper_dir}${1}"
    }
    xprop -root -spy _NET_CURRENT_DESKTOP | (
       while read -r; do
          desk=${REPLY:${#REPLY}-1:1}
          setwallpaper ${workspace_wallpaper[${desk}]}
       done
       )
obviously you're going to need to autostart it at login.

And also obviously it's going to make manual changing of wallpapers defunct.
