Trackpad randomly fails
« on: December 14, 2018, 03:15:09 pm »
Im having some issues regarding my trackpad.  It would randomly fail (as in become unresponsive)  when im in a middle of doing anything. I discovered this when I was opening and closing my laptop to see if my wifi was reconnecting properly, when I launched firefox the trackpad would stop working in the middle of some normal browsing and remain dead until I closed and reopen the laptop again, but give it a few minutes it would break again. Eventually I had to return to a usb mouse.

Typing in "lspci -nnk" I get-

My laptop is a ideapad 130s 11.6'', I have some experience with linux in the past, but not enough where I feel comfortable.
If you need more information about the laptop, the link below should have all the specifications.

Thanks in advance.

Does it stop working if you reboot, and NEVER close the lid ?

Sorry for the late response, but yes. I shut down everything and the first minute I was on the dashboard it failed after it connected to the wifi, so I closed the lid again and opened it. After waiting for the wifi to fully connect I tried it out, it worked for a brief moment until I used right click to open a new tab in firefox.

And you're sure this isn't a hardware problem ? .. I mean you've tested it as working in another distro ?

Can you post the output from:

xinput --list

Its not a hardware problem, it worked flawlessly on Windows 10. I also would like to mention I do have a usb mouse plugged when im closing the lid, but the only time I closed it without the usb mouse plugged in, it still failed.

After messing around with it some more the trackpad refuses to stay on, I gotta keep shutting the lid of my laptop and reopening it just to get the pad working for a few minutes.

I'm wondering if this could be a power management issue  :-\?  The reason being, the opening and closing of the lid, must be putting the laptop on standby, or turning the screen off.  These functions are governed by the power manager.  I'm just throwing in my two cents worth.  See if PCNetSpec thinks swapping out the the Xfce4 Power Manager for the Mate Power Manager is worth a try  :-\.  Don't worry it's really easy to do and reverse if necessary  ;).

Didnt work. After removing and installing the new power manager, I rebooted my system and proceeded to do random things with the touchpad. It still failed, so then I closed and reopened to lid to see if it would work. It did for a brief moment before breaking again. So I reinstalled my old power manager. Another thing that I noticed, when the touchpad fails when im currently dragging a window, the cursor doesnt let go of the window, not even when I start using my usb mouse. I can only move the cursor around when using the mouse but I cant let go of the window or right click. I have to do a complete reboot to get things to a normal state.

Also I forgot to mention, when I had the MATE power manager installed, it took longer for the touchpad to break. I can confirm this because when I reinstalled my old power manager and rebooted, the touchpad failed almost instantly.

Have you tried a more recent kernel, such as 4.18 or 4.19 ?
