can no longer log in to pepermint
« on: August 04, 2014, 10:06:32 pm »
I have installed Peppermint some two years ago on an spare computer and written username and password onto it. It has worked in the past and I have no reason to believe that someone played with it.
I boot up the computer and it asks for the user name >> enter and the asks for the password >> enter . Now I should be in, but no it asks me a gain for the username then for the password then for the username and round and round it goes.
Caps are off.
No other operating system is installed

Any idea how to get in?

Cheers Lori

Hi, lorenz:

I had the same problem with an older computer (also with Peppermint ... version 3, as I recall) that I had not used for several years and this link worked like a charm:

http://www.noobslab.com/2012/02/reset-your-forgotten-password-quickly.html

I think it should still work, just follow the instructions and you should be back in business in no time at all! ;)

When you say that you "had no luck", what exactly did you do and what happened?

Also what were you trying to do with your code lines that you posted? This is difficult for me to understand. :-\

Were you using a live CD or USB, or were you logged in to your system (which is what it appears to be)? If the latter is the case, then what exactly is the problem?

Thank you so much

You are dealing with a fool here!! Sorry.
I have no CD or USB. Peppermint is installed on a little Laptop. I went into safe mode and then tried to follow Noobslap's Youtube video.
I can not cut and past the code, but I have written it again for this post in the hope that you might be able to see what I am doing wrong.

OK, one step at a time

Boot to recovery mode

Select "Drop to a root shell prompt"

then type:
Code: [Select]
ls /home
and hit enter.

Now post back here what was returned.

For clarity that's:-

ls /home

it MUST all be lower case and the command only has one space.
(also that command starts with a lower case L not a 1)

Thank  you so much. Followed your instruction and the answer is     aaa .  That is the user name.

Am a bit slow with my responses. Am travelling in Far North of Australia and do not always have internet. The more your help is appreciated

Cheers Lori

OK, as before...

Boot to recovery mode

Select "Drop to a root shell prompt"

then (to remount the root file system as read/write) type:
Code: [Select]
mount -o rw,remount /
and hit enter.

Then (to change the password for user "aaa") type:
Code: [Select]
passwd aaa
and hit enter.

You will be prompted for a "New UNIX password" .. type it, and hit enter

You will be prompted to "Repeat the password" .. type it again and hit enter .. you should be told the password was successfully changed.

Shut down the PC with:
Code: [Select]
shutdown -P now

Fire it back up normally and use your "aaa" username and new password to log on.

HINTS:-

You have to be 100% accurate with those commands, so for clarity, here they are again:-

mount -o rw,remount /
(there are three spaces and one comma in this command .. there are no numbers, so those are "o"'s not zeros)

passwd aaa
(there's one space in this command, and that is NOT a typo .. it's passwd not password)

shutdown -P now
(there are two spaces in this command .. and that's a capital P)

Remember, Linux commands ARE case sensitive.

Also be aware when entering the password, nothing will be echoed to screen (not even ******) but it is going in, so just type it and hit enter.
