Dual Monitors [reSOLVED]
« on: December 01, 2018, 04:15:14 pm »
I feel like a n00b asking this question, so I'll post it here  ::)

I thought my old Acer Monitor was dying, so we purchased a new one. Then decided to keep the old one plugged in until it actually died. Now I can't get the monitors to accept their positions. I want my default monitor to be in front of me and the secondary to be upper left. but each time I drag and drop the preferred placement, the secondary screen keeps setting itself as primary. Is there some rule about workflow from left to right I am not toggling? I want to flow right to left w/o having to drag stuff off the right of the primary screen...

What are you using to position the monitors ?

Have you tried using ARandR ?

I'm also not understanding what you mean by "upper left" .. surely on a dual monitor setup you'd want the second monitor left of/right of/above/below the primary ?

ARandR shows me that I have a primary monitor sitting directly in front of me with the secondary monitor to it's left. Yet the menu and taskbar remain on the  monitor to my left sitting on the computer. I originally used Display to drag and drop the monitors where I wanted, but still couldn't move the taskbar to the screen in front of me w/o having to drag & drop pages in odd ways.

At one point I was able to get the taskbar on the screen in front of me, but could not drag pages to the left, they had to go off the right or off the bottom to move to the left screen, which I find counter-intuitive...

Hi Spence,

The panel never gets it right for me when set to auto for monitor display.   So in panel preferences set the panel to display on the one you want rather than auto.   Now please remember that if you select to display on monitor 2 and you remove monitor 2 - it won't auto revert to monitor 1 -  you will have to open a terminal to run nemo (as root) so you can get to /usr/share/applications  find panel and run it to tell it to display on monitor 1 again.

I hope this makes sense

Regards Zeb...

Apologies for messed up google drive links, had never used it before to upload here. I fixed them today. Which panel are you speaking of @Zebedeeboss? the ARandR one or the Display panel?

Oh, I don't use multiple panels, I was originally using Settings/Display to select which monitor is primary...

Don't know if this will help you, spence, but...

I run a 3-display tree, in a Christmas Tree configuration, if you will.  Additionally, I configured the top display to be divided into 2 displays, thus I technically have a 4-display tree. And, I had to configure it to work the same in both Peppermint and winders 10.

As you can imagine, it was a complex task  ;D

First of all, I should mention, I always use my VGA-driven monitor as the primary display - and, I place it in the lower-right corner of the tree. I do that for several reasons - the most important being, the VGA monitor is the one that BIOS uses during boot-up. All the other displays are blank at boot. Once everything fully boots, that's the screen that asks me for my password at login.  And, once I'm at the desktop, that lower-right display contains my conky layout, the bottom panel, menu and so forth.

That's probably more information than you need, at this point but it might ring a bell and give you some ideas of your own.

Getting back to basics, the only setup that's works every time for me is to autostart ARandR at boot, using a custom .desktop file. And, this lxrandr-autostart.desktop executes a custom shell, containing all the necessary arguments for my rig.

Your setup wouldn't require all of this nonsense, but once again, it might give you some ideas. Here's mine:

Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=LXRandR autostart
Comment=Start xrandr with settings done in LXRandR
Exec=sh -c 'xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 2560x1080 --pos 640x0 --rate 60.00 --output DVI-D-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x1080 --rate 60.00 --output VGA-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 1920x1080 --rate 60.00'
OnlyShowIn=LXDE

It's a PITA to setup multiple displays, depending on what you're trying to do, but once it's setup correctly, there's no reason to go through the nightmare again  ;)

I was already suspecting that my default monitor intransigence had to do with the older display being VGA... As set up now the VGA is off to my left on top of my MiniATX box... and I can easily drag stuff from left to right and back again in a way that feels logical and organic... This is so much better than having to drag to the right to get to the left screen... or worse still, drag off the bottom to get to the left screen.

I am always in awe of how your brain works to forge things into submission @VinDSL, while mine just sorta falls asleep at the prospect.

Multiple displays are a hoot, once you get the hang of them. I wish I had a wall of displays, like an airport.

Got 4 windows running in workspace 1 and 4 more running in workspace 2 right now, for instance:

2 of my bots are running in 4x19" windows in workspace 2...

Got 2 more in workspace 1, and the dj bot on the lappy. LoL  ;D

The only benefit I see to having more monitors is not having to switch workspaces so often.

If I wasn't so slothful, I'd mount a 75-inch display on the wall, behind this desk, and run all of my windows in it.

But, hey... there's only so many hours in a day, you know?

I have a suspicion that once you get used to running dual monitors, you'll want more.

Have fun!

My hubster used to run 4 monitors while he was still deeply into trading, but now only has three. I have one he cast my way after my prior monitor died completely. I can see how certain sorts of folks would love the multi monitor set up. I'm content with two or one should the VGA one actually die.

thanks for the invite, but that's not my scene musically...

The panel
is the usual Linux term for
the taskbar
if that helps to clarify what Zeb was saying.

Understood. I keep getting kicked out of rooms because users think my tunez are too dank and hard.

Last room I was in, I patterned their bot and figured out how to win the roulette game (moves you to 1st spot in the DJ queue, if you win) almost ever time. Idiots turned it into a blood sport. I told them resistance is futile, and they thought I was gloating.

AI is sooo stupid, sometimes.

I know the Dubtrack.fm CEO from a connect on LinkedIn. He's mostly into crypto-currency trading these days, but he's also a promoter and likes to DJ at night. 'Bubbles' said he used to spend $10K a month to keep the site going, but now it's down to $1K/mo. I thought that was a good thing, but he said it's because the users are fading away and going elsewhere. LoL He said he isn't spending another cent on the site until the #$%! devs get off their asses and give him a platform (UI) he can promote.

Yes, I love House, Dance, Trance, Trap, EDM and Dubstep but, as always, there's more to the story than meets the eye.

Anyway, to finish the story, 'Bubbles' showed up in the room the other night - we started chatting - and, that pissed the room off even more. So, I moved to the room at the link above. We'll see how long that lasts. So far, so good.

Isn't the web fun?!?!?  ;D
