Acces denied to folders and files (SOLVED)
« on: October 07, 2018, 11:49:16 am »
I just installed Peppermint 9 and find that I can open and work with all files in all folders. The problem is, that I cannot  upload a file to the cloud, or mail a file, I always get an error message: acces denied.  How can I resolve this?

I'm not sure how Onedrive works, but in case it's a local permission issue .. try copying (not moving) the file to somewhere in your home folder, THEN upload it to Onedrive.

If that doesn't work, post the path to the file you can't upload .. is it somewhere other than your home folder ?

It is a strange kind of problem, which just popps up on my Zbook:
It is not only OneDrive, also permission denied when I try to load files into WPS Office, which I use a lot, or OnlyOffce. Both programs I downloaded, because I couldn'f find them in the Software Manager. Just to try how it would work with LibreOffice, which Iinstalled using the Software Manager, every thing indeed worked perfectly.

On an other laptop, I installed Peppermint 9 recently, I don't have these problems. Why should Peppermint deny permission to acces those files?

Is there another solution as to re-install peppermint?

If I put the files in the Home folder, I can load them, also to OneDrive.
However, the fact is, that I have all my data on an external USB drive, which I use under Peppermint and Winows on several computers. So far, no problem. I have a lot of data with which I have to work with every day. The main folder contains about 350 GB. The internal system SSD 256 GB ...

So, summarizing, it works on my other laptop. Could it demand special permission for these programs on this installed Peppermint 9. Or, maybe something went wrong while installing Peppermint?

Where is the mountpoint for the external drive in both the working PM9 and the non-working PM9

to find out, open the drive in the file manager, then post the output from:
Code: [Select]
mount

On the non-working PM9, what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep usbmount

Can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
ls -l /media/eliasfrom both machines.

From not working P-9:
Code: [Select]
elias@elias-HP-ZBook-15-G2 ~ $ ls -l /media/elias
insgesamt 28
drwxrwxrwx 1 elias elias 28672 okt  7 10:12 'F - ELEMENTS'
elias@elias-HP-ZBook-15-G2 ~ $

By the way, F-Elements is the USB HD in question.

From the working one:
Code: [Select]
elias@elias-HP-EliteBook-2560p ~ $ ls -l /media/elias
total 28
drwxrwxrwx 1 elias elias 28672 okt  7 10:12 'F - ELEMENTS'
elias@elias-HP-EliteBook-2560p ~ $ ^C

Could it be that that the system got encrypted by accident, while installing the non-working one?

On the non-working one, try running
Code: [Select]
sudo chmod -R 777 "/media/elias/F - ELEMENTS"can you access it now ?

No, encryption of the OS shouldn't affect external drives.

That command doesn't help. When I try to open a file within WPS writer, I still do not have access to files on this F ELEMENTS USB HD. The same when I try another USB HD: I get this error message: Errors occur when WPS Writer is opening this file. Make sure you are permitted to access this file or drive. Make sure there is enough memory and disk space.
When I try to open within WPS Writer a file on that USB HD, I find /home / media empty
I did wipe the internal SSD completely and opening GParted , I created Partition Table GPT, before installing P9. Again, LibreOffice, which I installed using the Software Manager can access all files on the all external media. I can upload to Google Drive, but not to OneDrive: Error opening directory '/media/elias/F - ELEMENTS': Permission denied

Is the external HDD using a Linux or Windows file system ?

And within file manager are you able to create/delete files/folders on that HDD ?

I can indeed work normally with both external HDs,  to open and create fils and folders. Everything works normal using Libre Office, but not fot WPS Office and ONLYOFFICE, or OneDrive. Just once I manged to upload a file to OneDrive, one minute after that: permission denied. Both HDs are NTFS. A USB stick in exFa, another one in FAT and a SD card in FAT32 show the same problem. Today, as a miracle,  I am able to upload to OneDrive. At leat for thew moment.
