I'm going to suggest you copy everything off the card, then re-format it.

I agree with PCNetSpec. However, this does not explain what is happening with your other SD cards (unless they are all in bad shape). Or have I not correctly understood you: did you also try a different SD card? If so, and if you are still having the same trouble with a different card, then do as he previously selected with other (different) card:

"unmount then unplug the SDcard .. wait 10 seconds .. replug it .. then post the output from:"
Code: [Select]
dmesg | tail -n 30

@ Slim

I tried you're method but now the Acer won't find the phone via USB which isn't ideal and can't see files already existing in the SD card.

Do you have instructions to return the state back to how it was before ?

Thanks!

I suppose there's always the chance that the contacts in both SD slots (or your adapter) are dirty .. but at least with that card the system is having trouble reading it, when the system discovers file system corruption it normally remounts the file system read-only so no more damage can be done.

If you mean Slim.Fatz instructions .. simply rebooting will undo the manual mount.

Following my "method" should not change your SD card (of course, if you were able to write or paste something onto the card, then you should go back and delete that in order to return to the previous contents). Judging by the dmesg output that you posted in response to PCNetSpec's request, your card appears to be already damaged.

It is very important (in Windows as in Linux) that you always unmount a USB stick, drive or SD card before removing it from the computer -- otherwise you can "corrupt" the data on the device. To unmount from the command line use:

Code: [Select]
sudo umount /dev/mmcblk0p1

substituting the correct name, of course (NOTE that the command is umount and not unmount !!). In the file manager it is easy to unmount: just "right click" on the device listed in the left side of the file manager and select "Unmount Volume". Wait maybe 10 sec or so and then you may safely remove the device.

LOL that's so strange - after rebooting the netbook to disable the manual mount (from Slims instructions) I thought I'd just check to see if it worked.... well surprise surprise it let me copy/paste across!!   Not sure how/why that worked but either way now ready for the weekend!

Thanks again guys! :-D
