I would like to mention an observation with installations based on the 18lts ubuntu version.
i use older gear, (minimal 4 gig memory and dual core cpu) laptops and desktops and experience huge problems with bootable USB and DVD disks.
ubuntu, lubuntu, linux light, and also peppermint 9 will come to the bootmenu screen, but after that, choosing trying the distro, ore installing the distro i get a kernel panic.
tried all of these distro's with 32 an 64 bits, tried rufus for the USB stick creation but it will not help.

BUT!!!!.  a version of robolinux based on the 16lts, and now peppermint 8 (64 bits) will start up to, just like puppy linux.

in this case ( and another) the problems are on a hp/compaq  office desktop with pentium dual core that in an earlier stage worked with linux before (16lts linux light)

so i hope that i can upgrade peppermint 8 to 9 later on, but its strange that all this goes wrong right now, and it would be a shame that thoose who would try it for the first time would get disappointed  at boot already

Well, Peppermint 8 will still receive security updates until 2021, so there's no huge rush. I have a couple computers still on Peppermint 7 due to that lovely LTS support.

I'd suggest waiting for the inevitable Peppermint 9 respin to see if it is any better. It's possible that an update has come along or will come along that will solve this issue. With it happening in all 18.04 based distros, it sounds like an issue with the base OS or kernel.

Most likely a kernel regression in the 4.15 kernel on your hardware .. not much we can do about that I'm afraid :(

Might be worth seeing if any of the *ubuntu 18.10 BETA's are bootable on your system...

Xubuntu 18.10 BETA
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/daily-live/current/HEADER.html

Or Lubuntu LXQt 18.10 BETA
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/daily-live/current/HEADER.html

Or Ubuntu 18.10 BETA
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/HEADER.html

All of those should have the 4.18 kernel series.

Are these HP/Compaq systems ? .. if so you might want to see
https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,7219.0.html
and
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1520265#c4

You might need a BIOS update (if there is one).

Thank you PCNetSpec.
i am now downloading the Xubuntu iso and will do a testrun to see if that will solve it in the future

looking at the links of HP/compaq problems this seems te be the same problem as happens to me.
i will have to look if there are newer bios version but i doubt that

Must be a kernel regression with your hardware then .. not much we can do about that I'm afraid :(

Either we stick with an older kernel where new hardware isn't supported, or we go with the newer one and there's some risk of regression with some older hardware .. there's no solution that will always work for every piece of hardware.

Peppermint 7/7R/8/8R are all still fully supported though (until 2021), and there's always the hope that the kernel used in the Peppermint 9 Respin or Peppermint 10 will resolve the issue.
(specially if someone with the same issue has filed a bug report with kernel.org)

i will look into  that bug report thing.
problem will be, i think, that its a live USB that will not boot, so how could i pull some log files from that?

maybe you could answer me 1 thing.
is their a  terminal command that will upgrade the peppermint 8 to 9?
than we could find out if it is just the boot material ore the kernel itself?

Which kernel are you running in Peppermint 8 ?

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz

this is the outcome:
Quote
System:     4.15.0-36-generic x86_64 (64 bit)
           Desktop: N/A Distro: Peppermint Eight
Machine:   System: Hewlett-Packard product: HP Compaq dc5800 Small Form Factor
           Mobo: Hewlett-Packard model: 2820h
           Bios: Hewlett-Packard v: 786F2 v01.60 date: 10/26/2015
CPU:       Dual core Intel Pentium Dual E2160 (-MCP-) cache: 1024 KB
           clock speeds: max: 1800 MHz 1: 1321 MHz 2: 1209 MHz
Graphics:  Card: Intel 82Q33 Express Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.19.6 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa)
           Resolution: 1280x1024@60.02hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Q33 GLX Version: 1.4 Mesa 17.0.2

Info:      Processes: 164 Uptime: 4 min Memory: 485.8/3864.8MB
           Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.2.35

but after a strange event.
at first peppermint would not start with the previous kernel that was updated the last time, same kernel panic.
in Win10 i could find a bios update for the computer, installed it and then could boot peppermint again.
it than had the update ready for the shown kernel 4.15.0-36-generic x86_64 (64 bit)

i am now downloading peppermint 9 again 64 bits and try again booting and installing it

And SUCCESS ;D
9 installed without a problem and that is great!.
to bad i don't know what the problem was because i think not all the older systems will have updates to solve the boot problems.
peppermint 8 is a good alternative, but i mist the integration of the MS office online
