(SOLVED) How to use Wipe to delete permantly
« on: July 31, 2014, 02:03:03 am »
I had to delete the content of a pendrive
I installed 'Wipe' and gave in the command:
apt-get source wipe

Outcome:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
NOTICE: 'wipe' packaging is maintained in the 'Git' version control system at:
git://git.debian.org/forensics/wipe.git
Skipping already downloaded file 'wipe_0.22-1.dsc'
Skipping already downloaded file 'wipe_0.22.orig.tar.gz'
Skipping already downloaded file 'wipe_0.22-1.debian.tar.gz'
Need to get 0 B of source archives.
sh: 1: dpkg-source: not found
Unpack command 'dpkg-source -x wipe_0.22-1.dsc' failed.
Check if the 'dpkg-dev' package is installed.
E: Child process failed

In Home/Elias I found:
wipe_022.orig.tar.gz
wipe_022-1.deb.tar.gz
wipe_0.22-1.dsc

the path to the pendrive is:
/media/elias/PENDRIVE

What is up next?

Hi,

This is probably a program that you must compile before using. I almost always have problems compiling programs and therefore try to avoid using such programs. It is much easier, safer and quicker to use programs that are in the Peppermint repositories.

My suggestion is that you check out this guide for wiping data from a storage device:

http://how-to.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_wipe_a_hard_drive_clean_in_Linux

Be very careful or else you might delete your hard disk!!

Thank you very much for that link.

I installed GParted which doesn't mark my 4 GB USB stick.
Only :
/dev/sda - ext4 - 104 GB
/dev/sda2 - extended - 7.73 G
in which

/media/elias/VOLUME
      /dev/sda5 - linux swap - 7,73 GB

So how can I find the stick partition which shows up in the File Manager as:
/media/elias/VOLUME

I just found the stick in GParted through the menu at the extreme right sight of the Window and scrolling down.
I am quite new in Linuxland .... so, any help is extremely welcome !!! :) :)
This has solved my problem.

Thank you very much again for your time end energy.
