I have installed and reinstalled and reinstalled 5 from different unetbootin USBs.  I never have the option to "try" vs "install", but used the "install peppermint 5" icon  that appears in the upper right of the desktop.
Also used the "Install Peppermint 5"  permanently to your hard disk  menu choice under the system tools menu.
Once I shut down and remove the USB i just get a slightly less black screen on power up. Never gos anywhere else, for hours.
Peppermint 3 was working fine two days ago, now I have nothing.
Thanks,
jim

if you hit and hold the "Shift" key just after turning on your PC, are you presented with the GRUB menu ?

If this is a Laptop .. what's the make/model ?

No Grub menu either with or without the USB stick in.  Once I let up on "shift" it jumps riht into starting Peppermint 5.

Acer Aspire One Netbook, model KAV60 which is the same as 250D.

I thought you said it WASN'T booting into peppermint .. so where is the "Starting Peppermint" message coming from ?

I wanted you to try the above without the LiveCD/LiveUSB inserted.

Nothing without USB in other than a slightly blue tinted back screen.

If the USB is in and I press shift, also nothing until I let up on the shift button and there is a flash of a small blue screen, then the Peppermint logo and the progress bar underneath which says, "starting up...." and eventually I have the cloud looking desktop etc.

Wow lots of stuff from sudo:

Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders, total 312581808 sectors
Units=sectors of 1 * 512=512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes/512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes/512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0007c0bb
Device Boot   Start      End      Blocks      Id   System
/dev/sda1 *   2048      310503423   155250688   83   Linux
/dev/sda2   310505470   312580095   1037313   5   Extended
/dev/sda5   310505472   312580095   1037312   82   Linux swap/Solaris
Disk /dev/sdb: 1031MB, 1031798784 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 125 cylinders, total 2015232 sectors
Units=sectors of 1 *512 = 512 bytes

Device Boot   Start      End      Blocks      Id   System
/dev/sdb1  *   128      2015231   1007552   b   W95 FAT32

Gedit command says:
“could not load gedit repository:Typelib file for namespace ‘GTKsource’,version ‘3.0’ not found”  then it pops up a window with the following
overlayfs / overlayfs rw 0 0
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nosuid,nodev 0 0
/dev/sda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

Thanks, will have to go to work for a few hours

Boot to the LiveCD/LiveUSB, and either set up wireless or connect to your router with an ethernet cable (so you have an active internet connection in the live environment), then run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo sh -ec "apt-get install lvm2; vgchange -ay"
then
Code: [Select]
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
then
Code: [Select]
for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; done
then
Code: [Select]
sudo chroot /mnt
then
Code: [Select]
grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
then
Code: [Select]
update-grub
then hit Ctrl+D (to exit the chroot environment)

Then shutdown with:
Code: [Select]
sudo shutdown -P now
remove the USB stick and see if it will boot without it now.

The third command  sudo chroot /mnt results in this:

chroot: failed to run command '/bin/bash': No such file or directory

No command bilkid found,  did you mean:
Command bilkid from package 'util-linux' (main)
bilkid: command not found

You need to run blkid with "Super User" permissions the first time per session.  The command is:
Code: [Select]
sudo blkid
Hit enter and do the password thing if asked  :).  If you need to access it again in the same session, then you just enter
Code: [Select]
blkid
Good luck  ;).

Tip: To reduce typographical errors, click on, Code: [Select] to highlight contents.  Center click on your mouse while in the terminal to paste contents.
