Startup help needed [SOLVED]
« on: September 16, 2018, 08:18:41 am »
Hi,
I need some help with my computer running Peppermint 8.
When I login it shows the Grub login and defaults to a page that says
/dev/sda2 contains a file system with errors, check forced.
/dev/sda2: Inodes that were part of a corrupted orphan linked list found.

/dev/sda2: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY: RUN fsck MANUALLY.
    (i.e. without -a or -p options)
fsck exited with status code 4
The root filesystem on /dev/sda2 requires a manual fsck

BusyBox v1.22.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.22.0-15ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands..

(initramfs)_

Can anyone help me get this problem sorted please.

Hi donwatson, welcome to Peppermint. You are going to have to boot into a live session of Peppermint and then pull up a terminal and run

Code: [Select]
sudo fsck /dev/sda2
and type y and enter to all the questions. You could be there a while so be prepared. I suggest that once you are able to log in to your computer you perform a complete back up of all your personal files to an external memory. The last time this happened to me it was an indication my hard drive was going out. Good luck.
What was I thinking?

Thanks alynur,
I opened up to the (initramfs) and ran the fsck /dev/sda2 (without sudo).
It then ran through all the questions and then rebooted into my usual Peppermint.
I can't say how pleased I am to be back with my favourite OS.   ;D ;D
Thank you very much for great help

take care
Don W
PS I will purchase a backup drive today

Thanks again for the help alynur.
My new 2TB external HD has arrived. I am going to partition it with NTFS and Ext4, probably half and half.
I intend upgrading the computer to Pep 9 but I need rid of a lot of shxt files that are clogging up the system before doing that.
