Now I can see pantheon-greeter at login. However, the image I chose does not display, just a blank black background. This is strange because when I execute /usr/share/xgreeters/pantheon-greeter, I can see the image.

Now, how can I get pantheon-greeter to display when I select lock screen on the logout menu? Ever since I removed lightlocker, choosing lock screen does nothing.

If you've removed light-locker you can't .. AFAIK only light-locker and xscreensavers will lock the screen but xscreensavers won't drop you to the login screen, it drops you to an ugly screen of its own.

As for the picture .. all I can tell you is pantheon is fiddly about which pics it likes and which it doesn't .. I've had pictures that if saved from GIMP wouldn't work, but opening them in Pixlr and saving them again made them work and vice versa.

Anyway .. at the moment I'm advising people don't switch to it as I'm trying to sort out the clock (which doesn't appear to be updating properly)

OK, I'll hold off on using Pantheon-Greeter then. I have some beef with lightlocker, but I may reinstall. It should drop me to the pantheon-greeter screen when I lock the computer though, right? Are there any lightweight alternatives to lightlocker that you would recommend?

You can use it if you wish, just don't expect the clock on the logins screen to update .. if I figure out why I'll update this topic.

The "Lock Screen" button works if you have light-locker enabled.

Sorry I know of no alternative that will take you to the login screen.

I just recently discovered MDM Greeter, which looks as nice as Pantheon, though supposedly with far more configuration options. Anyway, I'm about to give it a try, and I thought others who were interested in Pantheon-greeter may be interested in MDM:

http://www.noobslab.com/2014/04/mdm-display-manager-and-mdm-themes-for.html

MDM @ Github: https://github.com/linuxmint/mdm

EDIT: It works great, looks fantastic, and the clock actually works (unlike Pantheon-greeter). It was very easy to setup, I did not have to edit any config files, just reboot. It even has an ElementaryOS theme, if that's your thing (personally, I think it's easily the nicest looking theme MDM comes with).

mdm is nice, and it's login themer (and themes) is excellent .. problem is it (so far) can't handle "Guest" sessions, so cannot (currently) be considered for Peppermint.

FYI, if at any point you decide to remove mdm, be SURE to change the contents of the file:-

/etc/X11/default-display-manager

from:-

/usr/sbin/mdm

back to:-

/usr/sbin/lightdm

or you'll have no login screen, just an error message about not being able to start your greeter.

Autologin with mdm....

Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/mdm/mdm.conf
and chance the "[daemon]" section from:-
Code: [Select]
[daemon]

Greeter=/usr/lib/mdm/mdmwebkit
to
Code: [Select]
[daemon]

AutomaticLoginEnable=true

AutomaticLogin=username

TimedLoginEnable=false

TimedLogin=

TimedLoginDelay=10

Greeter=/usr/lib/mdm/mdmwebkit
(obviously change "username" to the name of the user you want to autologin)

SAVE the file.

To Install

Anyone that's interested, I've created a PPA here:
https://launchpad.net/~mark-pcnetspec/+archive/ubuntu/mdm-testing
just add the ppa:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mark-pcnetspec/mdm-testing
update your package cache:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
and install with:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install mdm mdm-themes
and when prompted, select "mdm" as the display manager.

then add the 2 menu items as described below, so you can choose your theme.

To Add Configuration Menu Items
(allows you to choose (or test) a login screen theme)

If you want menu items for mdmsetup and mdm-theme-emulator, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/mdmsetup.desktop
and make it read:
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Icon=user-desktop
Name=MDM Setup
Comment=Setup MDM Login Screen Themes
Categories=Settings;GTK;DesktopSettings;X-LXDE-Settings;
Exec=gksudo mdmsetup
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
NotShowIn=GNOME;XFCE;KDE;
SAVE the file, and exit gedit

then run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/mdm-theme-emulator.desktop
and make it read:
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Icon=user-desktop
Name=MDM Theme Emulator
Comment=Test MDM Login Screen Themes
Categories=Settings;GTK;DesktopSettings;X-LXDE-Settings;
Exec=mdm-theme-emulator /usr/share/mdm/html-themes
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
NotShowIn=GNOME;XFCE;KDE;
SAVE the file.

You should now have 2 new menu items under
menu > Preferences > MDM Setup
and
menu > Preferences > MDM Theme Emulator
(click a theme name, then click the 'index.html' file to test the theme)

To Undo

If you decide to uninstall:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove mdm mdm-themes
then BEFORE you log out, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/X11/default-display-manager
and make 100% SURE it reads:
Code: [Select]
/usr/sbin/lightdm

Thank you for the instructions for autologin and the menu items, I was wondering about both of those.  :)

That theme emulator is handy... I was locking and unlocking the session to test themes.

Under [daemon] there is an entry:
Code: [Select]
 DefaultSession=Peppermint.desktop

That should remain as it is, correct?

Yeah,leave whatever is there already ..  just add the

Code: [Select]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true

AutomaticLogin=username

TimedLoginEnable=false

TimedLogin=

TimedLoginDelay=10
entries :)

Obvioulsy replacing "username" with the username of the account you want to autologin.
