Save and restore positions of desktop icons SOLVED
« on: September 05, 2018, 07:19:13 pm »
Is there a way to save and restore positions of desktop icons.   Two hours of searching and trying suggestion turned up nothing that works, and the script given in another thread on this forum did not work for me.

Can you link to the post on this forum with the script, and I'll take a look at it tomorrow.

Open a terminal and run these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
cd ~/.local/share/nemo/scripts
then
Code: [Select]
wget "https://dl.opendesktop.org/api/files/download/id/1508087753/s/6ca610b6bbf9dc70fffef9f317aff642/t/1536355151/u//happy_desktop ver 2.00.zip"
then
Code: [Select]
unzip 'Happy_Desktop ver 2.00.zip'
Now when you right-click on the desktop and select "Scripts", you should see an item called "Happy_Desktop.sh" .. which can save/restore desktop icon positions.

Hint - When using the script, be aware the "Done" button is just a "Close" button .. the one you're likely to want is the "Select" button ;)

Thanks, but I got to the unzip stage and it gave error, see below.
But I found a good copy and downloaded  it from here:
https://www.gnome-look.org/p/1195331/

Thanks Again!

Code: [Select]
$ unzip 'Happy_Desktop ver 2.00.zip'

a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive.  In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
note:  Happy_Desktop ver 2.00.zip may be a plain executable, not an archive
unzip:  cannot find zipfile directory in one of Happy_Desktop ver 2.00.zip or
Happy_Desktop ver 2.00.zip.zip, and cannot find Happy_Desktop ver 2.00.zip.ZIP, period.

It seems to work but on starting to run it it started asking me about icon rows/spacing so I assume that it was about to rearrange all my desktop icons according to a fixed grid system.  But I want to keep my icons just as they are and be able to restore them that way in the event of an unexpected change.  Apparently the program doesn't let you keep your existing desktop??

It does allow you to save your current layout and restore it.

The questions at the beginning are for a different feature .. just enter something like
12 colums
8 rows
