Want to set up Dual Boot Peppermint 9 with Windows 10
« on: September 05, 2018, 12:27:27 am »
I am very new to this I am looking for a step by step guide (I have seen them for other distros just not sure if it will be the same). I have a Lenovo ideapad u420 touch with an intel core17-4500u CPU @ 1.80 GHz    2.40 GHz  8GB RAM running Windows 10 with a 2TB hard drive.  What steps do I need to take to install Peppermint 9 alongside WIndows 10?

Hrm... Never thought about it. I just do it.  ;D

All of my 64-bit Peppermint machines are dual-booted with '10'. Setting them up is easy as pie, and ordinary as shaving or brushing my teeth.

The only difference is the BIOS settings. Some of my machines support UEFI/Secure Boot, and some don't.

I only have a couple of minutes, right now, but I'll give you a broad overview

I start with a freshly formatted (fat32) drive, then install winders first.

Once '10' is up n' running, fully updated, and stable, I reboot into a live Peppermint USB installation ISO. then use GParted to shrink the winders 'Basic data partition' down to a reasonable size. 150 GB is plenty big enough for me.

Next, I use GParted to make three Peppermint partitions. Two (ext4) partitions are used for 'root' and 'home'. One is for 'swap'.

Then, I install Peppermint using the 'Something else' option in Ubiquity, designating these partitions for 'root', 'home', and 'swap'.

Here's a snappy of what it looks like, on this machine...

And, that'll have to do it for now.  ;D

Gotta run. BBL

First of all, thank you for taking your time to reply to me even when you only had a little time.

I thought that I could do this without completely formatting my hard drive.  I also thought that I could set up the partitions within Windows beforehand. Also, I believe mine is UEFI, what extra steps do I need to do for this?

You can shrink the main Windows partition within Windows. After that the Peppermint installer should offer you the option to "install alongside Windows". You shouldn't have to do much more than that.

What murraymint said.

In Win10, shrink your Windows partition (leaving free unpartitioned space for Peppermint)

Then boot the Peppermint LiveUSB, Select "Try Peppermint", and once at the desktop double-click the "Install Peppermint 9" icon.

Progress through the installer, until you get to the screen that offers options like

Install Peppermint alongside Windows
Wipe the drive and install Peppermint only
Something else

And select the "Install Peppermint alongside Windows".

If the "Install alongside" option ISN'T available, STOP (no changes have been made at that point so it's still completely safe to back out and/or reboot) .. and let us know which options were offered,

Thank you all so much for your responses. I appreciate the guidance.

I am still deciding for certain which Linux Distro I want to use. I am deciding between Peppermint and Manjaro. I am trying to get all of my information in advance for whichever direction I go.

 ;D Thank you so much.
