All shell packages missing--URGENT help needed
« on: September 03, 2018, 09:51:01 am »
Installation was working fine, then this morning at boot I got "All shell packages missing."
Also, the grub menu never appeared on my installation so at first I could not do recovery.  Managed to restore grub and did Recovery Mode and selected reinstall Packages.  There was one red error that flashed by but no time to see it, otherwise seemed to work, but on boot I still got the missing packages error and now the grub men was gone again (it has always booted straight to the OS (only Peppermint is installed) and no grub appeared except after I restored it.

What to do?

Hi mysticmuse,

I walked away from a light installation a couple days ago, and I too ended up with a broken installation.  I know this isn't much of a trick, mysticmuse, but a re-installation followed by an update/upgrade and reboot fixed everything for me.  ;)

Is the system bootable ?

Have you at any time tried to install KDE ?

Are you selecting KDE as the session ?

What's the output from
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep kde
and
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep plasma

Probably plenty of KDE depends in there:  https://goo.gl/3NmGJ9   ;)

I tried to reinstall without formatting and manged to boot to the OS, but mouse and keyboard did not work correctly and could not get control and windows would not close properly--it was weird all around.  Ran recover and reinstalled Packages but that did not change the mouse/keyboard disfunction.  Finally gave up and installed a new copy on another partition that is working fine.  I don't know what went wrong but it was deadly.

Why did you ask about KDE?  I do have some KDE apps installed.

Thanks for all your suggestions but its water under the bridge now.

I've only ever seen the "All shell packages missing" error message associated with KDE (apps).

That is not to say it doesn't occur elsewhere, but that's the only place I've ever seen it .. and a quick 'google' seems to concur.
