Replacing the lockscreen wallpaper (SOLVED)
« on: July 29, 2014, 03:48:48 pm »
I want to change the lock screen wallpaper. I tried backing up /usr/share/peppermint/Peppermint-Five.png and it's symlink, Peppermint-Five.jpg, and then moving a new .png of the same resolution to the folder, but whenever I go to the lock screen, it's just a black background. I've also tried editing /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf as suggested here: http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,407.msg3326.html#msg3326 to point to a .png in another location, but that also results in a black background (and the lock screen loads noticeably slower). In both cases, I logged out and back in again. Do I need to reboot? What might I be doing wrong? Does it have to be a .png, or will a .jpg work, too?

Hi xanadu

I did this successfully on my wifes PC and I'm sure I had to reboot

No harm in trying

Rebooted, but still just a black screen. Does it have to be a .png or will a .jpg work? I've tried both, but neither work.

a jpg should work too

and I'm 99.9% sure you're on the right track with the "background=" line in
/etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf
(can't test it for sure ATM as I'm currently using pantheon-greeter)

but it can be finicky about the image .. I've had files that I'd exported from GIMP that didn't work, opened them in pixlr and save them again and they worked (and vice versa)

As you're thinkiing .. try saving it as a jpg

Yeah, still a blank screen, whether it's a .jpg or a .png. The jpg is un-converted (afaik), but I used pixlr editor to convert the .jpgs to .png.

Permissions are all wrong, lightdm doesn't have permission to read the file .. run:
Code: [Select]
chmod 666 /home/andy/Dropbox/Wallpapers/Peppermint/Peppermint5new.jpg
now see if it works

It did not resolve the problem. I will try a few other images, and also try some of the wallpapers that came with Peppermint to see if they work (the default one did work before I changed it).

Weird .. works on my system (when I switched back to lightdm-gtk-greeter
(only difference was the 666 permissions and it was in /usr/share/peppermint/wallpapers)

Maybe you can upload the image to somewhere and provide a link ?

or maybe take a look at this:

Don't know if this helps but I created a folder in /etc/lightdm called images and placed the background image there and it worked no problem also i never removed the original path in /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf, I just commented it out so it could easily be put back to default

might be worth trying it that way

Good luck

Here is one of the images I was trying if someone wants to give it a go: http://www.wallpapersam.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Beach-Sky-Beautiful-Purple-Glow.jpg

I will check out Pantheon greeter, it looks very nice!

That's a beautiful image I'll download it this evening and try it in my system and post back with the result

incidentally that would make a beautiful login screen with Pantheon :)
