Running JAR file: Problems Installing OpenJDK [SOLVED]
« on: July 29, 2014, 06:15:05 am »
I'm running Peppermint OS4 and have recently needed to run a .jar file which I downloaded.

I first tried installing openjdk-7 software from the main Software manager but it wouldn't download from there.

I've tried installing via Synaptics software manager but some files couldn't be installed.

I've also tried installing via terminal but the same files are unavailable.

My issues/errors are almost identical to the OP in this thread: http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,294.0.html

I've tried playing around with the server settings but now notice only 1375 packages available in the Software manager and the openjdk-7 package is no longer there.

I think it's something obvious I'm doing wrong, but don't want to fiddle around any more and run the risk of messing something up.

Any help would be much appreciated! :)

Peppermint 4 is dead, they shut down the repositories for that version.   :o

Hey pepperman how's it going?  It is as rjm65 says, Peppermint OS Four is dead.  http://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,739.msg6283.html#msg6283.  Your only option in the Peppermint camp is either Peppermint OS Three or, Peppermint Five, both are based on LTS releases  I ran Peppermint OS Four 32 bit and I loved it.  I'm now using Peppermint Five 64 bit.  it is even better than Peppermint OS Four and technically, it has support until April 2019.

Thanks guys for the input - ahhh so that's the problem.  I wonder what distro would be good for an old Acer Aspire One as I only put this on a few months ago ?

I have Peppermint OS3 and Xubuntu on another machine but looking for an easy-ish upgrade route which would be light enough and compatible with this machine without too much fiddling... If anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it otherwise thanks for the answers! :-)

Both Peppermint 3 and 5 work on the AA1 zg5 .. I'm typing this from one now.

Peppermint 3 is slightly lighter (if you still only have the default 512MB RAM of the SSD model)) .. but if your zg5 is happy running Peppermint 4 it should be fine with Peppermint 5

Installation is pretty much identical to Peppermint 4 ;)

Any problems gimme a shout.

Ok great and thanks again.  Mine is the 1gb ram model with 160gb hard-drive.  I am quite tempted by 3 but I guess support will run out earlier...  does 5 have any other real major improvemints over 3?

If you've got 1GB, I'd go for Peppermint 5

Improvements .. in our opinion *many*, we tend not to try going backwards ;) ..  and if you're used to Peppermint 4 you'll probably feel more at home in 5 than 3

Okay I just got OS5 installed and after some setting up it's looking pretty fine so thanks for the recommendation PCNetSpec! :-)

However, I'm still having issues with this .jar file which I downloaded.

When I right click to open in openjdk runtime the error msg reads as follows:

Blocked: /usr/bin/java -jar

The file ...... is not marked as executable etc

When I open said .jar file in the archive manager, there are a number of folders/files.  The question is do I need to find an executable file here and if so, does anyone know which file extension I should be looking for ?

to run a JAR file, you have to run:

java -jar yourjavaapp.jar

in a terminal...
or if not in the current directory

java -jar /full/path/to/yourjavaapp.jar

If it works, you can then make a launcher that runs that command if you like.

What's the path to the JAR file ?

Where in the menu's would you like the launcher and what do you want it called ?

and do you want it in the menu for ALL user accounts, or just this one ?
