Gamepads
« on: July 27, 2018, 06:23:35 pm »
Okay folks, my turn to ask for advice :)

I'm new to gaming on Linux, so how is the best way to get a wired Xbox360 controller to work with Peppermint 9 .. preferably where it's set up and activated automagically every time it's plugged in (or the system is booted).

And is there a way to use a Stem Controller in non Steam games ?

Wired XBOX 360 controllers are plug and play, no setup necessary. Just plug it in and go. However, individual games may need to be configured to use the controller. Usually, it's in the game's options under "Joystick" or "Gamepad."

Having said that, there are gamepad/joystick configuration programs for Linux. I can't think of the names offhand, and I'm on mobile and will be until I get home in the morning. I believe one of those can be used to make the Steam controller (POS that it is) work with non Steam games. You may want to check the Steam discussions for that.

However, I personally would go with the XBOX controller. They're so good I bought one for my Steam Machine. Plus, nothing beats plug and play. :)

I could have sworn the last time I tried I had to mess with something called xboxdrv or similar before it was recognised.

When was that? My Steam Machine has Peppermint 7 on it and it worked OOTB.

Okay it works without anything in American Truck Sim (in PM9), but last time I tried with Tomb Raider (PM8) I had to mess around with xboxdrv (or whatever it was called) before it'd work.

I'll try Tomb Raider again later .. maybe it'll "just work" too in PM9
