Nvidia Legacy 304 & 340 drivers
« on: July 27, 2018, 05:34:29 am »
Seems that Ubuntu 18.04 on which Peppermint 9 is based is having problems with legacy Nvidia cards/drivers

Two devices I have tested with Geforce 6XXX series card using the Nvidia 304 driver.  Using the current 4.15.0 kernel (including the latest 4.15.0-29), they both failed to load either the Nvidia or Nouveau drivers.  They both worked with Nvidia drivers using the 4.13.0 but this is no longer supported so I have reverted both devices to the  latest4.4.0-xxx kernel which has long term support.

Two cards tested, Geforce 8600 and Geforce 9800 both using the Nvidia 340 driver.  Using the current 4.15.0-29 kernel with Nvidia, the 8600 has frequent random lock ups, sometimes at the log in screen (total lock up, ctrl, alt F2 don't work) other times can log in but it will freeze after 5 to 10 minutes.  GeForce 8600 seems to work okay with current kernel.  Both work fine with Nouveau drivers on current kernel.  Both work fine on previous kernels (i.e. 4.4.0) with Nvidia drivers.  Presently using both these in one desktop, separate monitor attached to each, with Peppermint 9 using Nouveau drivers plus current kernels with no problem.

Are these from the PPA ? .. because I didn't think 304 was available in the default repos ?

I'm using 340 on my GS 8800 legacy without issue (s).

Doing this from memory. I'm not sitting at my machine at the moment - 50 miles away.

I'll revisit this thread later.

304 drivers are both using Peppermint 8 and they are in the repository.

VinDSL, can you confirm if you are using Peppermint 8 or 9 and also what  kernel you are using.

Still going by memory, but it's Peppermint 9 32-bit, and Linux 4.15.0-29, AFAIK.

I'll double-check when I get home, and post an Inxi readout.

I tried several combinations and that's what worked best.

Okay I'm lost .. your first post appears to suggest you're having problems with the 304 and 340 drivers IN PEPPERMINT 9 .. but 18.04 (and therefore Peppermint 9) doesn't have the 304 driver in the default repos :-\

Or are you saying they're not working in Peppermint 8 .. now Peppermint 8 has switched to the 4.15 kernel ?

Okay, here's the rig in question...

Code: [Select]
vindsl@Fenris-2 ~ $ sudo inxi -SGCMm
System:    Host: Fenris-2 Kernel: 4.15.0-29-generic i686 bits: 32 Console: tty 0
           Distro: Peppermint Nine
Machine:   Device: desktop System: Dell product: Dimension 3000 serial: CKYBY51
Mobo: Dell model: 0N6381 serial: ..CN4811148L04H2.
           BIOS: Dell v: A03 date: 01/05/2006
CPU:       Single core Intel Pentium 4 (-MT-) cache: 1024 KB
           clock speeds: max: 2992 MHz 1: 2992 MHz 2: 2992 MHz
Memory:    Used/Total: 278.1/2010.3MB
Array-1 capacity: 4 GB devices: 2 EC: None
           Device-1: DIMM_1 size: 1 GB speed: 400 MT/s type: SDRAM
           Device-2: DIMM_2 size: 1 GB speed: 400 MT/s type: SDRAM
Graphics:  Card-1: Intel 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller
           Card-2: NVIDIA G98 [GeForce 8400 GS Rev. 2]
Display Server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: nvidia
           Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz
           OpenGL: renderer: GeForce 8400 GS/PCIe/SSE2 version: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 340.106
vindsl@Fenris-2 ~ $

Bwahahaha! Check the stingy RAM usage.

Don't know why I keep thinking my legacy nVidia card is a GS 8800 - it's a GS 8400 PCI. Found one NIB on eBay for $40 USD w/FS.  ;D

This Dell Dimension 3000 is V picky about graphic cards, drivers, et cetera. But, this setup works a treat.

BTW, I strip all the cruft out of the nVidia 340 package. Here are the only things I run on my doorstop...

Code: [Select]
vindsl@Fenris-2 ~ $ apt-cache policy nvidia-340
nvidia-340:
  Installed: 340.106-0ubuntu3
  Candidate: 340.106-0ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 340.106-0ubuntu3 500
        500 http://mirrors.namecheap.com/ubuntu bionic/restricted i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
vindsl@Fenris-2 ~ $ apt-cache policy nvidia-settings
nvidia-settings:
  Installed: 390.42-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 390.42-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 390.42-0ubuntu1 500
        500 http://mirrors.namecheap.com/ubuntu bionic/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
vindsl@Fenris-2 ~ $

They're obviously both from the regularly supported Bionic repos.  8)

Oh yes, confusion reigns, had myself confused there for a while thinking what have I done.  The Geforce 6xxx both have Peppermint 8.  It is the 4.15 kernel that broke them.  Should of realised they weren't Peppermint 9 because they had the 4.4.0 kernel in the repository, and the different wallpaper is a bit of a giveaway :)

Thank you VinDSL for the additional info. Can you advise how you strip all the cruft out of the nVidia 340 package when you get a minute?  Will have another go installing with a stripped down package.

I am wondering if there is any advantage in using Nvidia with these legacy cards.  I am using  the  Nouveau drivers with the Geforce 8600 and Geforce 9800, and they run all day without a glitch.  Even done some video editing and rendering and not noticed any difference with rendering speed.

I am wondering if there is any advantage in using Nvidia with these legacy cards.

I'm as lazy as the next guy.

I install the package, then purge all the cruft afterward, using Synaptic. Click, click, click. Done.

And, I alternately use nVidia and Nouveau drivers, depending on the machine. For instance, I'm using nVidia drivers on my Dell Dimension 3000, but I use Nouveau drivers on my custom Mountain Mods/DFI LanParty box.

IMO the only real benefit for using nVidia drivers is the "Digital Vibrance" feature in X Server settings. If you're running a crappy old CRT monitor, TV set or whatevs, Digital Vibrance will make it look almost as good as a LED-backlit LCD display - just make sure to allow your CRT to warm-up and stabilize for 1/2 hour or so before adjusting Digital Vibrance in the nVidia X Server settings. If you make adjustments with a cold tube, it'll be like looking directly at the sun, an hour later.

For most users, Nouveau drivers are good enough, maybe even preferable - less things to tinker with.

Also, my Conky script requires a LOT of tweaking, when switching between nVidia drivers and Nouveau drivers. They're really two different animals, when you're messing around with a complex Conky script. So, sometimes, I pick one or the other depending on which one requires the least amount of tweaking. Bwahahaha.

Told you I was lazy ...  ;D

To add the Proprietary GPU Drivers PPA in Ubuntu based OS's and update the software sources, use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa

sudo apt update

Close terminal then open All - then Additional Drivers and install latest nVidia drivers currently 396

Legacy cards  that require the 304/340 drivers cannot use the 396 driver.  Adding the PPA for these card could render a system unusable.
