I installed the driver for my Samsung SCX-4521F printer/scanner/copier by following the steps here for my  model:

https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,5379.msg54123.html#msg54123

After installing, the printer test page printed out fine.  But when I try to use the scanner in Simple Scan, the scanner is recognized as "Samsung Orion", but scanner does not start.

I went to terminal and ran a Scanimage  and got:

Code: [Select]
wally@ThinkPad-T420s ~ $ sudo scanimage -L

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

Then ran a sane-find-scanner and got:

Code: [Select]
wally@ThinkPad-T420s ~ $ sudo sane-find-scanner

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04e8 [Samsung], product=0x3419 [SCX-4x21 Series]) at libusb:002:004
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

Hello MyOwnPepper, I would suggest installing Xsane and then trying again with Simplescan.

Code: [Select]
sudo apt install xsane

Thanks for suggestion.  Installed Xsane and tried but no scanner recognized.

Okay first thing to try
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install suld-scanner-usblp-fix
did that make any difference ?

If not, what's the output from
Code: [Select]
groups
and
Code: [Select]
scanimage
and
Code: [Select]
sudo scanimage
and Is the scanner connected via USB ?

running sudo apt-get install suld-scanner-usblp-fix did not make a difference.

Outputs from groups:

Code: [Select]
wally@ThinkPad-T420s ~ $ groups
wally adm lp cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare libvirt

from scanimage:

Code: [Select]
wally@ThinkPad-T420s ~ $ scanimage
scanimage: no SANE devices found

from sudo scanimage:

Code: [Select]
wally@ThinkPad-T420s ~ $ sudo scanimage
[sudo] password for wally:
scanimage: no SANE devices found

Yes, it is connected via USB.

If you run:
Code: [Select]
export SANE_USB_WORKAROUND=1
does
Code: [Select]
scanimage
and/or
Code: [Select]
sudo scanimage
now find your scanner ?

Hi MyOwnPepper. Can you print anything besides the test page? I'm just wondering if you might have a bad USB cable. And have you tried moving the cable to a different USB port on your computer?

Always nice to have another pair of eyes  :).

I had not tried moving to a different USB port, so I did and...the scanner now works!!  :D .  I can scan.

The USBs on my laptop which I'm running on has two USB2 ports and one USB3.  Scanner only works on the USB3.   Not sure why.  Maybe more power coming from the USB3?  I'm using a USB2 cable.

Nevertheless,  I'm going to go ahead and mark this thread SOLVED.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Great! I figure if PCNetSpec can't give you a solution, then it's probably not software.  :)
