Nvidia driver bricked me (SOLVED)
« on: July 17, 2018, 12:44:35 am »
Put on peppermint9 had everything working great (only a few aps easy reinstall).  Then i tried the 390nvidia driver and my screen is stuck at 4k with a mouse and grey screen.  Even the opensource driver was fine in 4k.

I was hoping it didnt make my fonts small ( the 96*96 thing) but this is worse :)

I really like the new version, things are smoother and easier to grab the corner of a box (my biggest complaint).

Hi chadwix,

Sorry to hear that, when at the broken screen can you press 'Ctrl+Alt+F2' and then right after 'Ctrl+Alt+F7'

Does this then get you to a working desktop ?

I just reinstalled, only takes like 35mins.  Ill try that next time (no idea what it does).  Its a tv computer in the living room.

The problem is my tv is a 4k but the computer is a core2duo with a passive nvidia 720gt.  Os installs in 4k then i switch to 1080p.

Everything i watch is 1080p or less, didnt know a 4k tv would be a pain in the butt.

Only prob i had in past was font size with nvidia on 7 and 8, could always lower res.

Worked great.  It used the driver to put me in 4k mode (much smoother with driver) and i was able to set back to 1080p.

My tabs are small now (will do the 96*96 thing) but my start menu wasnt affected.

Thanks for your help

Are you currently having to do the Ctrl+F2 then Ctrl+F7 finger dance every boot-up ?

And can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz
please.

Its fine on the boot now, it does go grey screen for a sec then the driver kicks in.  Its like the video driver loads last.

As you can see, only the top of the box and bottom bar are affected by the font size bug with nvidia.

Its messed up now, kodi mouse was lagging and had huge desync in video.  So i tried to change back to the open source driver and it wont allow it.

Stuck on 390, cant even try 340.  Gonna reinstall (iptv in unwatchable), it only takes like 30mins to setup all my stuff again.  Nvidia has always been crappy for me on peppermint, i have 3 comps running it and always the same thing.  Will get an ati or built in on mobo next time, only this machine games, rest can be dinos, doesnt matter.

Oh that's a shame.  Remember to save/back up your:
Code: [Select]
~/.kodi
folder to somewhere safe.  After you've reinstalled Peppermint 9 and Kodi.  Transfer the saved .kodi folder back to your home folder.  It'll save you having to set up Kodi from scratch  ;).
Backup! Backup! Backup! If you're missing any of these -  you ain't Backed Up!

I only have one repo to install.  A few checkboxes, type in a line  then install from zip.  I really like that kaffeine also installs the files needed for my tv tuner/recorder from the shop.  Only two apps i install aside from ublock and download helper in firefox.  Kodi is really easy to setup once you do it a few times.

Had my win10 machine crash (lost stuff), now they are all temps with another drive for backup.  No problem wiping anything at any time, everything is easily replaced :)

Thanks again for the help

Why is this topic marked as solved if the issue isn't and the topic doesn't contain a working solution ?

If it was (ABANDONED), it should be marked as such or not marked at all.. marking a topic as (SOLVED) invites other people searching for a solution to the same problem, so only topics that contain a discovered working solution and how to reproduce the fix should be marked (SOLVED).

Where an issue at first appears solved and the topic is marked so, then the issue resurfaces, the (SOLVED) marking should be removed for the first posting again.

There's also the fact that a lot of people who might be able to help don't read topics marked (SOLVED), because well they've already been solved, it says so in the title ;)

Hi chadwix,

The  4.15.0-29 kernel is also now being offered via updates - so hopefully this will help matters too

The alt-control f2 + f7 did work for my grey screen though.

Overall I solved it by reinstalling.  Same exact install on bedroom comp (did same day) and im allowed to change the driver without issue.  The fonts went to 4k (small)at the top of my windows when i put on the nvidia driver.

This is the only comp i really need the nvidia driver so i can play games (diablo3 and Path of exile)

I changed it to abandon but some stuff was solved.  Up to you guys, ill change it to whatever.

Thanks again

It was either the kernal updates or the mutliverse nvidia 390 in additional drivers

Screen wasnt all grey this time, could see clock.  Hit ctrl+alt+f2 then ctrl+alt+f7 (like you said, great advice) and i was able to set my resolution back to 1080p.

I have restarted a few times and it seemed to stick.

Thanks again
