Kernel 4.15.0-24 kills my ethernet connection (SOLVED)
« on: July 14, 2018, 04:40:50 pm »
On Pep 9, if I go from kernel 4.15.0-23 to 4.15.0-24,
I no longer have a connection to the internet via the ethernet port.
Go back to 4.15.0-23, all is well.

What kind of Ethernet adapter do you have? Please run this command in a terminal and paste the output:

Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz

Kernel 4.15.0-24 has all sorts of problems (most notable the one that gives some nvidia users a black screen) .. in fact that they pulled it from the repos and everyone is waiting for 4.15.0-28 which is currently in proposed.

If I were you I'd stick with 23 until the next one comes out.

I mean, we could try fix the wireless in 24 .. but it might just break again in the next kernel.

Well, this is on a older spare desktop that I am trying out Pep9 on.
I'll just leave it on kernel 23 until the next kernel comes out.
( Was just trying out Pep9 before committing to installing it on
my main machine)

I have had problems with my wlan as well and was confused, but I went back to 4.15.23. I do not think that it is a risk if a router and/or a firewall runs in the background. We should wait until the next kernel release is out.

A few weeks ago I have read an article about the quality of the kernel releases. If I remember well there was some talk about too much work and no proper quality control. I can not say if this is true  but we all know that bleeding edge with kernel installations means a little bit too much stress sooner or later. Do less, but do it well...

The 4.15.0-24 kernel has been removed from the upstream repos .. so if you haven't already installed it, you can no longer get it.

Basically stick with 4.15.0-23 until the next kernel appears.

Stay away from 4.15.0-24

Beyond that, we couldn't offer any other assistance unless/until you answer AndyInMokum's question.

Hi esjay,

The 4.15.0-29 kernel is now being offered via the updates - can you try this version and see if your ethernet now works.

That is excellent work! Very fast and now hassle-free. Kernel 4.15.29 is working fine.
Thanks to whom it may concern and especially Zeb and PCNetSpec :)
Happy to be here and thinking about a way to help with my limited skills...
