Can't change desktop background to solid color
« on: July 02, 2018, 12:23:26 pm »
Wasn't sure if I should post this here or a different forum so feel free to move it if needed. I've been using PeppermintOS since version 5. Just finished installing 9 and everything seems to be working great except that I can't change my desktop background to a solid color. I've been able to do this in every previous version. What I've done previously is rt-click on the desktop, select Change Desktop Background, click on the color box w/o clicking on any wallpaper image, select a color (usually I just use black), click OK, click Apply.  With previous versions of Peppermint the wallpaper would disappear leaving just the solid color background. Now, nothing happens -  the wallpaper image stays. Has something changed?
FYI I use a dual monitor setup, but that has been the case for me since I've used Peppermint 7 and hasn't been a problem before.
Thanks.

I can confirm that this is happening.

Don't choose a wallpaper, choose a colour and nothing changes it keeps the old wallpaper

I'll have a look at nitrogen, but for now I can offer 2 workarounds.

The colour is being set, it's just that the wallpaper isn't being set to blank .. so either

a) create a 100% transparent wallpaper, stick it in /usr/share/peppermint/wallpapers .. and select that.
or
b) choose your clolour, then run:
Code: [Select]
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri 'file:///'
to point gsettings at a wallpaper that doesn't exist.

[EDIT]

Or I guess another option would be to just create a single colour wallpaper :))
(yes I know .. I'll look at nitrogen ;))

The problem appears to be in some odd sh** going on between nemo 3.6.5's handling of the desktop, the patches necessary to get it to work outside cinnamon, and nitrogen.
At some point I should see how the newer nemo 3.8.0 behaves.

Thank you for the confirmation. Nice to know it is reproducible by someone else and not just me.

Thank you for providing workarounds.  I will keep an eye on this subject to see when/if you find the solution to the issue (assuming you will post when/if you do). Best wishes.
Should I mark this as solved or wait until the underlying issue is fixed?

Thank you.

Leave the topic open, the issue isn't solved yet .. and I can then post here if/when I find a solution, or push an update :)

Thanks for letting us know about this.

[EDIT]

I should add, it's unlikely I'll be looking into this today .. far too busy 'preparing' to watch 22 guys kicking the heck out of a round thing .. priorities and all that ;)
(but recent history suggests I'll probably be free from tomorrow onwards)

Where are you guys getting the colour options? I only get the wallpaper options. I do select a photo of my family and open it then click on file and chose set as wallpaper for my desktop. In Ubuntu 18.04 I do get the different options but not in Peppermint.
What was I thinking?

Hi Alynur

in the image below when you open nitrogen - do not click on a wallpaper : if you then click on the black square to the right of the automatic box (bottom left) it brings up the colour selection screen.  choose your colour click ok click apply and you used to get a plain coloured screen.

I couldn't get this to work so I created "null.jpg" in the /usr/share/peppermint/wallpapers directory. I opened Change Desktop Background, selected the "null.jpg" icon. Then I used the solid color changer and got what I wanted. Having just come from Linux Lite, I was surprised that this was so difficult to do in Peppermint.

Next trick, figure out how to do gradients.

@PCNetSpec - I used your gsettings command to remove the wallpaper and then discovered that the background colour does not change!

Turns out that only when an image is chosen together with a background colour, then the colour is applied. This is revealed after I again removed the wallpaper using your gsettings command.

Kind regards, John

If you just want a solid color, you could just go into any basic art program and make a square or rectangle image, it doesn't even have to be a big image, and fill it with the color you want. Then save that as a .png image and apply it to your background with it set to fill the whole screen.
