No available output devices - Sound Issues
« on: July 24, 2014, 02:31:19 pm »
HI, I've just installed Peppermint 5 on my old Compaq Presario C700 and I've got everything running well, except there's no sound. I've searched all over and tried a few different things to no avail, if i click on the sound properties and go to hardware output devices there is nothing available to configure, i've installed all available updates and still nothing, what should i do?

Is there any output from:
Code: [Select]
aplay -l
or
Code: [Select]
sudo lshw -C multimedia

I get
aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...
and as for the other command it asks for my password and then does nothing.

Unless you've disaabled sound in the BIOS, you're going to need to go through
Code: [Select]
gedit /var/log/dmesg
and look for clues, as it doesn't appear the sond card is being detected at all.

Have you run a full system update and rebooted ?

Did audio work from the LiveCD/LiveUSB ?

I couldn't find any relevant information in that log.. I never ran the live cd because this is a very old computer so its not exactly the quickest, I just went straight to the install. All I know is when it had Windows 7 on it the sound worked fine, and the sound card was there.  So I guess I'll find a different distro to play with, Peppermint seems a little too quirky and buggy for me anyway. thanks for the help :/
