(SOLVED) How to install software compressed in tar.gz?
« on: July 24, 2014, 09:57:04 am »
I have some software which I downloaded.

The name is Antidote. tar.gz

When I open it I get:

Install_Antidote.bash

What next?

Software ending on .deb installs itself.
Here i did not yet find how to proceed.

Thanks for your help.

Change directory using "cd" to where the Install_Antidote.bash file is

something like
Code: [Select]
cd ~/.Downloads/Antidote
(obvioulsy you'll need to adjust the path)
then run it with:
Code: [Select]
./Install_Antidote.bash
if it warns that you need elevated privileges, run it with "sudo" .. as in
Code: [Select]
sudo ./Install_Antidote.bash
WARNING: You are logged into reality as 'root' .. logging in as 'insane' is the only safe option.

Sorry, I am very new to Linux ....  :-\

The software now is not on a CD but in :

/home/elias/Downloads

The thing to do is putting this command in the Terminal:

./Install_Antidote.bash
or
Putting the path before  it like:
/home/elias/Downloads/Antidote

After having run the code:
sudo updatedb

I put in my password. Then:

I put the code:
locate Install_Antidote.bash

But nothing happens:

elias@elias-System-Product-Name ~ $ locate Install_Antidote.bash
elias@elias-System-Product-Name ~ $

I do not get any output using the last command:

elias@elias-System-Product-Name ~ $ mkdir -v ~/Downloads/antidote
mkdir: Verzeichnis »/home/elias/Downloads/antidote“ angelegt
elias@elias-System-Product-Name ~ $ mv -v ~/Downloads/Antidote_8_v4_Linux.tar.gz ~/Downloads/antidote/Antidote_8_v4_Linux.tar.gz
»/home/elias/Downloads/Antidote_8_v4_Linux.tar.gz“ -> »/home/elias/Downloads/antidote/Antidote_8_v4_Linux.tar.gz“
elias@elias-System-Product-Name ~ $ cd ~/Downloads/antidote
elias@elias-System-Product-Name ~/Downloads/antidote $ tar xvf Antidote_8_v4_Linux.tar.gz
Lisez-moi Installation.txt
Installe_Antidote.bash
elias@elias-System-Product-Name ~/Downloads/antidote $ sudo updatedb
[sudo] password for elias:
elias@elias-System-Product-Name ~/Downloads/antidote $ locate -i Install_Antidote.bash

Thank you for your reaction.
You only can download when you buy the software.
It corrects french language. And something I need every day.

As it seems quite difficult to install it on Peppermint, I guess the best thing to do is to contact the software company
and ask for a version ending on *.deb, wich will install itself, I hope.

I will report thair reaction.

Have a nice sunday,
Jozef

I't not that its necessarily hard to install, it's just that I don't know where the installer is.

We've just unpacked the archive .. but it doesn't appear to contain the file you mentioned it would, so I'd need to see what it does contain.

By reflecting again on what you wrote before:
'I't not that its necessarily hard to install, it's just that I don't know where the installer is.'

I understood that there had to be an installer apart from the
'Antidote_8_v4_Linux.tar.gz' file.

So I had another look and found a file in a folder ending on .bash
which indeed proved to be the installer you were looking for.
So, I got the software installed, thanks to your help.

I guess all compressed software ending *.tar.gz when opening
produce a *.bash file which always is the installer, isn't it?

Starting with Linus as a layman is not easy, but I am learning every day thanks to the really great forum help.

Jozef

Erm, NO...

A .tar.gz is just a compressed archive, similar to a .zip file .. it's contents will vary.

By far the majority of the time it will just contain the source code for the application which you'd need to compile for your current OS/kernel.
But sometimes for proprietary software it may (as in this case) contain a binary installer .. usually frowned on in the open source world as you probably won't be able to study the code, so have no idea what just got installed or if it's a security risk.

Which is why this is not the "normal" way of installing software in Linux.

Is the usual way of installing sofware in Linux by giving a command in the Terminal,
a command you will find somewhere by opening the compressed archive  *.tar.gz ?

Again, when ending on *.deb there won't be a problem, when ending on *.tar.gz it will always be a surprise what you'll find within?   :-\
