a shortcut (symbol) of a an existing folder on the desktop.

 For instance:

In a USB HD I have a map wich I would like to open through a desktop Icon.
How can I create that shortcut icon?

Does double clicking on the map open it ? .. in which application ?

What is the path to the map file (including its name) ?

The pathname is:

/media/elias/Verbatim/Current D1

When opening the map I just get the list of the files within.

OK, can you host the map somewhere (and provide a link), so I can download it and try to work out which application is needed to open it.

or do you know which application will open it ?

If you don't want the link to be public .. post it to me in a personal message.

As I understood that  there is basicaly a question of misunderstanding I realised That I am using the wrong word.
I was talking about creating a shortcut of a folder, which in my lingo is called a map.  ::)

So sorry for that, but I m not very much used to the english appelations.

I also changed the title of the post.

Ahh, I just realised that in your other topic ;)

Anyway, creating a soft symlink to that folder is easiest .. run:
ln -sv <path to target> <path to where you want the symlink and its name>
(being careful to surround the paths in quotation marks if they contain any spaces)

so in this case
Code: [Select]
ln -sv "/media/elias/Verbatim/Current D1" "/home/elias/Desktop/Current D1"

I guess, we are almost there ....

This did not work. May be because that folder is on a Windows partition.

But I remember that in Peppermint 4 I had shortcuts of various Windows folders on my desktop.

Although I am Dutch and living in Holland, I am using Peppermint in German with a German keyboard
because I have to work a lot with German Texts.

This is what I got:

elias@elias-System-Product-Name ~ $ ln -sv "/media/elias/Verbatim/Current D1" "/home/elias/Desktop/Current D1"
ln: Die symbolische Verknüpfung »/home/elias/Desktop/Current D1“ konnte nicht angelegt werden: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
elias@elias-System-Product-Name ~ $

It means that the folder could not be created because the folder could not be  found.

try
Code: [Select]
ln -sv /media/elias/Verbatim/"Current D1" /home/elias/Desktop/"Current D1"
if that still doesn't work .. post the output from:
Code: [Select]
ls -a /media/elias/Verbatim

The first one didn't work either.

The second one gives this output:

elias@elias-System-Product-Name ~ $ ls -a /media/elias/Verbatim

OK, this is confusing
Does this fail:
Code: [Select]
ls -a /media/elias/Verbatim/"Current D1"

and what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
ls /home/elias

Hi jozefmw,
Have you tried simply dragging and dropping the folder from the media to your desktop while holding down Ctrl + Shift?

That should create an alias to any file and should work when the drive is available.

Screenshot example of my desktop with an alias to a usb stick
