Plank with Whisker menu and increased spacing
« on: June 18, 2018, 02:31:07 pm »
I recently started using the dock Plank and found out some basic tricks. It is a great and simple dock and more convenient to handle starters than the Xfce panel.
My current desktop with Plank on the bottom left: https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,1167.msg71828.html#msg71828

Plank installs with:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install plank

A Whisker menu, even if you start if from Plank, will open up at its location in the Xfce panel.
Put a panel that only contains a Whisker menu on the bottom left (or whereever you want to place it). Then change the icon to a transparent image. The Whisker menu in Plank will be placed above this location.

Start Plank with
Code: [Select]
plank
Also put it in Autostart in LXSession configuration.

The settings of Plank can be reached with CTRL + click with right mousebutton on the dock.
I selected the "Transparent" theme. I also selected to align on the bottom left.

To change the spacing of the items, you need to edit the configuration file:
Code: [Select]
sudo xed /usr/share/plank/themes/Transparent/dock.theme

I added ItemPadding=10 to [PlankDockTheme]:
Code: [Select]
[PlankDockTheme]
TopPadding=-12
BottomPadding=2
ItemPadding=10

Custom starters for the items in Plank can be created on the desktop. However, if you delete them on the desktop, they will disappear in Plank too. So, I made a folder "plank-items" in my home directory. I create the starters on the desktop and give them custom icons, captions and commands. The command to start the Whisker menu is:
Code: [Select]
xfce4-popup-whiskermenu

Create the starter on the desktop, drag it to the folder "plank-items" and from there drag it into Plank!

Voilą.

Items can be deleted, if you drag them out of Plank.

That's pretty cool :)

One last question if I may....

If the plank dock were in the middle of screen, so it's left hand side wasn't up against the left of screen, does the whiskermenu still open, and where ?

As far as I know, the Whisker menu always opens at its location in the Xfce panel.

You can make a panel with a width of 0 %, put a Whisker menu in it and drag it to the spot where you will place the icon for the Whisker menu in Plank. So, on my desktop this panel with only the Whisker menu in it is sitting right behind the green starter in Plank. As said above, I made the icon in the panel invisible by giving it a transparent image as an icon, because it would be difficult to place one starter pixel-precise above the other.

Maybe there is another way? This is the fix I found.

Sorry I was misundertanding, I thought you'd somehow managed to get the whiskermenu to run from plank.

This does raise the question though .. could the whiskermenu be made to LOOK like it was starting from nothing (say in the middle of screen) by having a hidden/transparent short second Xfce-panel (dock mode) with a single whiskermenu item on it .. if you get my meaning.

The only dock I found that can be really integrated into an Xfce panel is DockbarX. My fix for Plank looks like the Whisker Menu would run from the dock.

The Xfce panel, even if you tell it to hide, is not reliable in doing so. I tried placing a panel with the weather plugin in the middle of the screen. It was often visible behind the active window.

There is also the command
Code: [Select]
xfce4-popup-whiskermenu -p
that opens the Whisker Menu at the current cursor position. But this too requires an existing Whisker Menu in a panel.

Yeah I was thinking of a tiny little transparent xfce-panel only wide enough for a a single whiskermenu button that only shows an icon (and that icon is itself just a 16x16 or smaller) transparent image .. effectively making the icon invisible on a tiny invisible dock, but where you can still position that tiny invisible dock where you want then lock it on place.

You could also set "don't reserve space on borders" which would effectively allow windows to show through from underneath

Wouldn't that effectively hide the dock and whiskermenu .. but you could still launch it from either

a) a keyboard shortcut
or
b) a launcher on plank that just runs "xfce4-popup-whiskermenu -p"

Just thinkiing out loud .. haven't actually got time to play ATM :(

Ah,, ok. It could be tiny and transparent, so it would be practically invisible and it could go anywhere you place it. Or a script could set the x and y coordinates of  the cursor and xfce4-popup-whiskermenu -p could make it appear at this position.

The current hack does what I want it to do, so I won't play with it either. ;)
