According to someone here:

he installed 2x4GB sticks .. along with the 2GB that was already there (for a total of 10GB) and it worked.

So I'd guess dmidecode is correct and the slots are capable of 4GB each.

It might be that Dell/Crucial are only quoting 4GB because the system came with 32bit Windows preinstalled .. so it was an OS limitation not so much a hardware limitation
