Sometimes, one wonders if Microsoft mergers are all about destroying whatever they buy...   :-\

This made me think of the Simpsons episode where Microsoft "buys out" Homer.

Nearly one month ago!
Still, the linux kernel is being hosted at github, https://github.com/torvalds/linux

I would expect this to be one of the first projects to move?? Or not...

Give me an example of a project that was bought by ms that didn't turn into crap!
That said, I'm still using github... but, the things I do/have there are minor.

I'm with pin on this one.

Can any of the people around the web that are suggesting this is a storm in a teacup, and we have nothing to worry about, please answer pins question above ?

Because I for one can't think of a single thing Microsoft have ever touched that hasn't gone all to hell very quickly.

If i'm proven wrong GOOD .. but those that suggest you shouldn't be worried and/or should give them the benefit of the doubt, well let's just say theyhaven't studied their history.

I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but I wouldn't bet my life code on it .. history is screaming that you **should** be worried.

Microsoft may have the best of intentions at the moment, but they are not benevolent, they are governed ONLY by the need to please shareholders/stakeholders .. when the board demands it account for itself in the corporate structure, it will either be monetised, somehow else bent to their corporate motive, or axed.
(most likely all 3 .. monetised, bled dry, then axed and replaced with their own offering after somehow locking you in  .. history STRONGLY suggests this, and at his point people have every right to be concerned)

Microsoft, **PLEASE** prove me wrong.

Thank you for your support  ;)
I must be honest here...
My repos, who cares?
Void linux, I'm sure that if things would come to the point, they would fix it.

But, ...the linux kernel? I'm sure that Linus would fix that, but... honestly!!... Why keeping it at github to start with?

Damn it!! I really need to get my BSD laptop up and running  ;)

I'd be fairly certain they're watching this with an eagles eye.

A project of that size, with that many contributors couldn't just move overnight even if they wanted to.

You can also be 100% certain their code is also held elsewhere.

And considering Microsoft are now a major kernel contributor, we don't know what's been going on in the background.

I'm not suggesting anything untoward, I'm just saying kernel.org may not want to be seen as the first to be flipping the finger at Microsoft at the moment .. but I'd bet they're uncomfortable enough to already have an exit strategy ;)

Yeah, let's hope they do!! It would be a mess...
...still, I've just got my NetBSD usb-stick ready. Just in case!?  ;) Just wish hardware support would be better on NetBSD  :(
