Raspberry Pi 3 B+ light OS with web browser
« on: May 25, 2018, 09:12:53 am »
Hi,
Sorry for the OT since this has got nothing to do with Peppermint, I hope I'll be forgiven.

so I just read that Peppermint won't run on RPi. That Raspbian is HUGE tho (5GB!). Could some experienced user recommend a lightweight OS that doesn't need a 8GB card to boot off of? Just need to open a website in it. And preferably connect to wi-fi for that purpose also.

Thanks!

My other daily distro, Void linux supports RPI. Check the forum for details, as I know nothing about RPI's

Hmm! Bet Void's are smaller, but as I said...
...I know nothing about it! Check for yourself https://repo.voidlinux.eu/live/current/

Dunno how big it is installed, but maybe try Ubuntu MATE
https://ubuntu-mate.org/download/
it's a 1.3GB download, but I have no idea what that expands to once installed.

or even lighter may be the Lubuntu RasPi version which is only a 707MB image
https://lubuntu.me/downloads/

or a Xubuntu image that isn't much larger at 799MB but I can't find a direct download link .. you can get it (and the others) via torrent from here:
https://ubuntu-pi-flavour-maker.org/download/

I'd steer clear of the Ubuntu flavours at that last link .. they'll be cut down command line only images.

I ran Ubuntu MATE 15.10 on my Raspberry PI2 and it was pretty light as far as I remember.  It was as slow a molasses on a cold day though.  Ubuntu MATE will probably run reasonably well with the extra grunt of the Pi3

Raspbian used to be the way to go.  They've now decided to package it with everything possible.  A really stupid decision in my opinion.  The Raspberry Pi and Raspbian were meant to teach school kids about computing.  Now they don't have the opportunity to even download and install packages.  As I said, it's a really stupid decision.
