Desktop Items disappeared [SOLVED]
« on: May 16, 2018, 10:41:02 pm »
Hello,

All of my desktop items disappeared. I have googled the issue without finding any solution apart from the 'sudo reboot' option.

Any idea as to what the problem could be and how do I get my desktop items back without having to reboot?

Thanks in advance.

Navigate -- menu > system tools > deconf Editor > org > nemo > desktop
On the right you will see "show-desktop-icons."  Make sure the box is checked.

If it already is then you might need to reboot after all.

What, if anything, did you install or what changes did you make just before the icons disappeared?

I believe the desktop icons disappeared when I was either (i) rearranging the order of the desktop icons or when I (ii) selected the 'add to desktop' option for a browser that I downloaded.

What browser and from where did you download it, if you don't mind sharing?

It was Opera browser, but I deleted it quite fast as it doesn't seem optimised for Linux.

Hmm.  I use Opera without issue, as do several others on the forum.  But I digress.

Okay.  The only thing I can suggest, if you are opposed to a full reboot, is to open your terminal and execute
Code: [Select]
sudo service lightdm restart
That will log you out with a sort of modified reboot, though.

Okay, thanks. I will list this as solved and might reopen the thread if the problem reappears and I am incapable of solving it.

Have you tried going into the "Desktop" folder and removing the shortcut you added that started the problem ?

Try temporarily moving everything out of the Desktop folder to a temporary folder somewhere .. then see if adding a single new item shows up. If it does, start adding stuff back from the temporary folder until they disappear, then undo the last item.

Hope that made sense .. if nothing else it'll rule in/out whether it's being caused by a desktop icon, or if the problem is more complex.

I have tried the strategy outlined by you, but it is impossible to perform any actions at all on the desktop once the items have disappeared. A reboot is the only measure that has solved the problem for me thus far. I have the OS installed on two laptops and on both I have encountered the disappearance of the desktop. As I mentioned, it happens when you rearrange the order or positioning of the desktop items or if you select the 'add to desktop' option.

EDIT: I misunderstood your instructions. I know what you mean now; I will try the option suggested by you if the problems reoccurs.
