Ethernet Works / Wifi doesn't since today's updates [SOLVED]
« on: April 23, 2018, 11:54:32 pm »
>:( Since today's update arrived around 11 am my time (Currently Pacific Time zone) My browsers spin endlessly under the Wifi network... but load instantly when the ethernet cord is plugged in so... with cord plugged in: here are the things you aksed for PCNetSpec. My only clue today was given when trying to use speedtest.net to see if we had an area wide problem... got an error about a firewall blocking it over wifi, but ran spiffily via ethernet

I've had updates today and my wireless is fine.

This might be a long shot but have you tried rebooting your router ?

At first glance spence your wireless **appears** to be working, try rebooting the router as Graeme suggests .. and rebooting the computer too.

If that still doesn't work, is your wireless network SSID "remington" ?

and do you know your roters IP address ? (possibly 192.168.1.1 ?)

If my guess was correct, what's the output from:
Code: [Select]
ping -c 3 192.168.1.1
WARNING: You are logged into reality as 'root' .. logging in as 'insane' is the only safe option.

First thing we did, once we realized it wasn't a single web page under a DDOS attack [MeWe of course] was reboot our router Graeme. My computer has been rebooted several times since. There was a wider area issue that arrived to all devices connected to it. Since that reboot about 5 pm yesterday, my other half's two computers and both our phones are fine. We have wifi-calling enabled on our mobile devices due to our distance from AT&T cell towers.

Correct on both counts remington and 192.168.1.1. I am currently typing here under the very very slow pages the wifi is serving up, do thee usb wifi dongles fail? we've had a series of power blips lately,

Code: [Select]
spence@antec ~ $ ping -c 3 192.168.1.1
PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

Here's a repeat of the info you request in these cases, with ethernet cord diconnected:  :-\

Additionally, every page move or request if followed by a connection error before the page is served, keeping fingers crossed this info sends. Other half is concerned to due the recent flood of Russians hacking USA's routers... but he sees nothing unusual in our incoming /outgoing traffic He and Putin do have dossiers on each other...   :-X

And here's an error code i receive for most websites I try to reach [/color]

I'm probably clutching at straws but have you tried clearing your browser cache ?

also I maybe misunderstanding something but I don't understand why you didn't get any output from rfkill list, was your wifi adaptor connected at the time ?

Was this:-
Code: [Select]
spence@antec ~ $ ping -c 3 192.168.1.1
PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
all that was retuned ?

or was there more, like this:-
Code: [Select]
spence@antec ~ $ ping -c 3 192.168.1.1
PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

3 packets transmitted, 2 received, 33% packet loss, time 2021ms

Yes, it was connected at the time... I never get any returns from rfkill list...

that's all that was returned over wifi only..., now with ethernet cord plugged in I get:

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.223/0.244/0.268/0.025 ms
spence@antec ~ $

So PCNetSpec, may we surmise this USB WiFi dongle is failing? Fried by frequent power pops?

Graeme

Deleted both browser's cache @Graeme, doesn't change anything about how the desktop works when attempting to connect over WiFi... only noted, Mozilla's Seamonkey connected to NOTHING... but Chromium would still slowly connect to a few sites including the peppermint forums.

Maybe, but not necessarily spence .. it does seem to be "seeing" the network, just not sure it's actually transmitting anything yet.

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
iwconfig?

suggests your DNS is not resolving hostnames, you could try changing your DNS settings in your network manager to Open DNS 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 as per the following screenshot although I'm not convinced it will make any difference but it can't do any harm to try

It's likely more than just DNS Graeme if he can't ping the router by IP address .. to me it (so far) looks like the wireless is receiving but maybe not transmitting.
(though theoretically it could still be software)
